CHAPTER 5 — The Truth Elena Carried

CHAPTER 5 — The Truth Elena Carried

Bianca stared at Alessandro.

For a heartbeat, neither of them moved.

Then she smiled.

It was the same graceful smile that had charmed politicians, business leaders, and the women who envied her.

"Alessandro," she said softly. "You're making a terrible mistake."

He didn't answer.

She glanced at the notebook in his hand.

"So... the maid finally talked."

"No."

"Then one of your men betrayed me."

"No."

Bianca's smile faltered.

"Then how?"

Alessandro stepped aside just enough for her to see the end of the hallway.

Elena stood there, holding Clara's hand.

The little girl clutched her worn stuffed rabbit.

Bianca's eyes narrowed.

"The child."

Clara instinctively hid behind her mother.

Bianca let out a quiet laugh.

"A six-year-old."

She shook her head.

"I nearly ruined everything because of a six-year-old."

Alessandro's voice was calm.

"You ordered them to kill a child."

"I ordered them to remove a witness."

"She is six."

"She remembered too much."

Elena gasped.

"You monster..."

Bianca turned toward her.

"Don't pretend you're innocent."

"You should have minded your own business."

Elena's hands trembled, but this time not from fear.

"You were planning to murder him."

Bianca looked back at Alessandro.

"Murder?"

She almost sounded offended.

"No."

"I was planning to survive."

She slowly placed her suitcase on the floor.

"You think your enemies created this?"

She laughed bitterly.

"They came to me because they knew something you never understood."

Alessandro remained silent.

"They knew I would never spend my life waiting for your phone calls."

"Waiting while you disappeared for days."

"Waiting while every dinner could become your funeral."

"You loved power more than people."

"You even expected me to marry into it."

Alessandro didn't deny it.

Some of it was true.

He had built an empire where trust was measured in loyalty and loyalty was often purchased with fear.

But none of that justified what she'd done.

"You could have walked away," he said.

"I wanted everything."

Bianca answered without shame.

"The money."

"The houses."

"The influence."

"And then I wanted freedom."

"So I chose both."

Lorenzo appeared behind Alessandro.

"Boss."

Alessandro nodded.

"Search the suitcase."

Inside were stacks of cash, multiple passports, diamonds from the hidden room, and the flash drive.

Lorenzo plugged it into a laptop on a nearby desk.

Folder after folder appeared.

Shipping manifests.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Voice recordings.

One recording caught Alessandro's attention.

Its title read:

Insurance.

He clicked it.

Bianca's voice filled the room.

"If Alessandro discovers the missing diamonds, eliminate the maid first."

Another voice asked,

"And the child?"

A pause.

Then Bianca answered coldly,

"No witnesses."

The recording ended.

Silence settled over the hallway.

Clara buried her face against Elena's side.

Elena closed her eyes, fighting tears.

Even the guards looked away.

Bianca realized there was no escaping the truth.

Instead of begging...

She straightened her shoulders.

"So what now?"

"You'll kill me?"

Alessandro studied her for several seconds.

"When we met," he said quietly, "I thought you saw the man beneath the reputation."

"I did."

"And?"

"I didn't like him."

Her honesty surprised everyone.

"I liked the empire."

Alessandro looked toward Elena.

She immediately lowered her eyes.

"You should take Clara somewhere safe," he said.

"I'm sorry?"

"Tonight."

"Both of you."

Elena hesitated.

"I can't leave."

"You can."

"I work here."

"You worked here."

He reached into his jacket and removed a small brass key.

"My grandmother owned a cottage outside the city."

"No one knows about it."

"Stay there until this is over."

Elena stared at the key without taking it.

"Why?"

"Because your daughter saved my life."

She blinked.

"I don't understand."

"If Clara hadn't spoken today..."

He glanced at the crushed wedding invitation still lying on the floor.

"...I would have married the woman who sold me."

Tears finally rolled down Elena's cheeks.

"I was afraid no one would believe us."

Alessandro looked at Clara.

"I believe her."

The little girl peeked out from behind her mother.

"Really?"

He nodded.

"You were very brave."

She gave the smallest smile.

"My teacher says brave people are still scared."

A faint smile touched Alessandro's face for the first time that day.

"Your teacher is wise."

Suddenly Marco hurried down the corridor, his injured shoulder freshly bandaged.

"Boss."

"What is it?"

"We questioned the prisoners."

"And?"

"They all told the same story."

Marco swallowed.

"This wasn't just Bianca."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Explain."

"There was another person."

"Someone inside your organization."

"The one who introduced Bianca to your enemies."

Marco handed him a folded sheet of paper recovered from one of the attackers.

"There was only one name written on it."

Alessandro unfolded the page.

His eyes stopped on the signature.

For the first time in years...

The color drained from his face.

Lorenzo looked over his shoulder and whispered,

"...That's impossible."

Because the signature belonged to only one man—

The mentor who had raised Alessandro after his father's death.

The man he trusted more than anyone.

The man everyone believed had died five years earlier.

Underneath the signature was a single handwritten sentence:

"Meet me at the family vineyard before sunrise. Come alone if you want the whole truth."
