CHAPTER 3 — Behind the Hidden Door

CHAPTER 3 — Behind the Hidden Door

The room fell silent.

Even the guards outside the suite seemed to sense that something had changed.

Alessandro kept one hand on the concealed door, his expression unreadable. Beyond the narrow opening, a cold draft rose from a stone staircase disappearing into darkness.

A voice drifted upward.

"...the shipment leaves before midnight."

Another answered sharply.

"If Vitale finds out, we're dead."

Alessandro's eyes hardened.

No one was supposed to conduct business beneath his own home without his knowledge.

He looked back at Elena.

"You knew this was here?"

She slowly nodded.

"I found it by accident while cleaning."

"When?"

"Three weeks ago."

The same night Clara had wandered through the halls.

Alessandro understood why Bianca had panicked.

This wasn't about a broken pitcher.

This was about witnesses.

He pressed a button hidden beneath his watch.

Within seconds, two trusted guards appeared in the doorway.

Marco and Lorenzo.

Unlike the other guards, these two had served Alessandro for over fifteen years. They knew one rule better than anyone.

If Alessandro spoke quietly...

Someone's world was about to collapse.

Without taking his eyes off the staircase, he gave his orders.

"Seal every exit."

"Yes, Boss."

"No one enters. No one leaves."

Marco nodded once before disappearing.

Lorenzo remained beside the hidden entrance.

Alessandro turned toward Elena.

"You and Clara will stay behind me."

"No," Elena whispered.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She looked at Clara before lowering her voice.

"I heard Bianca speaking with men I'd never seen before."

"What about?"

"They weren't discussing jewelry."

Alessandro waited.

"They were discussing your routes."

His expression didn't change.

Inside, however, every instinct sharpened.

"My shipping routes?"

"Yes."

"They had maps."

"They knew which warehouses had the fewest guards."

"They even knew which nights you traveled alone."

The silence that followed was heavier than stone.

Those details existed only within Alessandro's inner circle.

Someone close to him had been leaking information.

Bianca wasn't acting alone.

She couldn't be.

A metallic clang echoed from below.

Someone had heard the hidden door open.

Voices rose.

"Who's there?"

"Check upstairs!"

Alessandro drew his pistol in one smooth motion.

"Lorenzo."

"Boss?"

"With me."

The two men descended the narrow staircase without another word.

The underground corridor smelled of damp earth and engine oil.

It ended at a reinforced steel door left slightly ajar.

Light spilled through the crack.

Inside, four men stood around a long wooden table covered with blueprints, ledgers, passports, and velvet bags overflowing with diamonds.

One of them looked up.

His face turned white.

"Boss..."

The room froze.

Every man there recognized Alessandro Vitale instantly.

No one had expected him.

Least of all today.

Alessandro stepped inside.

"So."

His voice remained calm.

"This is where my missing merchandise has been going."

No one answered.

One man reached slowly toward his waistband.

He never made it.

Lorenzo's pistol was already pointed between his eyes.

"Don't."

The man's hand stopped.

Alessandro surveyed the table.

Shipping schedules.

Account numbers.

Fake customs documents.

And in the center...

A leather notebook.

He opened it.

The first page contained a list of names.

Warehouse managers.

Drivers.

Security captains.

Every one of them worked for him.

Beside several names were payment amounts.

Bribes.

Someone had been buying loyalty from inside his organization.

He turned another page.

His jaw tightened.

There, written neatly in elegant handwriting, was a single name repeated again and again.

Bianca.

Payments authorized.

Shipments approved.

Witnesses removed.

Elena Romano.

Pending.

Alessandro closed the notebook with deliberate care.

"So that's why she wanted the maid gone."

Before anyone could respond, a loud crash echoed from upstairs.

Gunfire.

One shot.

Then another.

Lorenzo touched his earpiece.

His face drained of color.

"Boss..."

"What?"

"It's Marco."

"What about him?"

"They're under attack."

Alessandro's heartbeat remained steady, but his eyes turned to ice.

"How many?"

"At least eight armed men."

Another burst of gunfire rattled through the ceiling.

Then came something worse.

A child's scream.

Clara.

Elena's terrified voice echoed down the staircase.

"They've taken my daughter!"

For the first time in years...

The feared Mafia boss didn't think about diamonds.

Or betrayal.

Or the empire he had spent decades building.

He thought only about the frightened little girl who had trusted him enough to ask for help.

His gaze swept across the smugglers.

"If Clara is harmed..."

He slowly raised his pistol.

"...none of you will live long enough to regret it."

May you like

Without waiting for an answer, Alessandro sprinted toward the staircase, the sound of more gunfire shaking the mansion above.
