Chapter 8 - The Media War

But a dying dynasty doesn't vanish without a final, toxic gasp.
While Beatrice and Thomas were locked away in a high-security holding facility awaiting their federal grand jury indictment, the high-priced corporate defense attorneys they had retained launched a massive, coordinated smear campaign against me on social media.
Vicious articles and heavily edited video clips began circulating on Facebook and news blogs, claiming that I was an unstable, gold-digging woman who had suffered a severe postpartum breakdown. They alleged that I had fabricated the entire kidnapping story to extort a massive divorce settlement from the Vance estate, and that the police had been misled by an old family grievance.
The public comments were brutal, with thousands of people debating my sanity and demanding that Clara be removed from my custody until a full psychiatric evaluation could be completed.
"They're trying to shift the narrative to get Beatrice out on bail," Maya said, her face pale as she scrolled through the viral Facebook posts on her phone. "If she gets bail, Eleanor, she has offshore funds we haven't tracked yet. She will flee the country."
I stood up from my hospital bed, walking to the window. I looked down at the courtyard below, where dozens of paparazzi and news reporters were gathered, their cameras pointed up at the maternity wing.
"They want a show, Maya?" I asked, my voice dropping to a sharp, cold register. "Fine. Let's give them the truth."
I called Detective Ruiz and Marcus Vance, my newly appointed estate attorney. Within two hours, we organized an emergency live-streamed press conference right in the hospital auditorium.
I didn't wear makeup. I didn't hide my bruises or the hospital band on my wrist. I walked onto the stage holding Clara in my arms, with Quincy standing proudly by my side, holding my hand.
Before a single reporter could ask a question, I pressed play on the large projector screen behind me. The audio recording of Beatrice Vance’s confession in the mud of Blackwood Crest echoed through the room, crystal clear, terrifying, and absolute.

“Sarah was a fool, just like you... I took care of her, and I will take care of you.”
The auditorium fell into a dead, suffocating silence. The live stream views exploded into the millions within seconds, the viral comment sections reversing instantly from skepticism to horror and outrage. The defense attorneys’ web of lies was obliterated in a single, devastating moment of truth.
