Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The next morning, the financial and social worlds were hit by a tsunami of breaking news. The headlines across every social media platform and news outlet were explosive: THE VANCE LEGACY A LIE: MATRIARCH ARRESTED FOR INFANTICIDE AND MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR ADOPTION FRAUD.
I sat in a private, secure room at the University Hospital, wrapped in a warm blanket, a hot cup of tea in my hands. Clara was resting peacefully in a plastic bassinet beside my bed, her vitals completely stable, a team of specialized pediatric nurses monitoring her every breath.
Detective Ruiz sat in the chair opposite me, a thick legal file folder in his lap. "We ran the DNA tests on Thomas this morning, Eleanor. It’s official. He is not a biological Vance. Beatrice adopted him illegally from an underground agency forty-five years ago to prevent the family fortune from reverting to his uncle’s estate. Sarah discovered the records seven years ago, and that’s why she was murdered."
"And the baby?" I asked, my voice cracking. "Sarah’s son?"
Ruiz looked down at his files, his expression grim. "We executed a search warrant on the Vance family mausoleum three hours ago. We found the remains of a infant boy buried beneath the foundation, wrapped in a blue blanket. The forensic team confirmed he died of exposure. Beatrice had him put there to ensure Thomas remained the sole heir."
The door to the room opened quietly, and Quincy walked in, escorted by Maya. He looked small, but the heavy, terrified shadow that had hung over him for years was gone. He walked straight to the bassinet, looking down at his little sister with a soft, protective smile.
"She’s safe now, right, Eleanor?" Quincy asked, looking up at me.
"She’s safe, Quincy," I said, pulling him into a tight embrace, tears finally flowing down my cheeks. "We are all safe now. They can never hurt us again."

Thomas Vance had been arrested at the cabin, charged as an accessory to attempted murder and corporate embezzlement. The board of Vance International had already voted to strip him of his titles, freezing every cent of his personal and corporate accounts to pay for the massive federal liabilities heading their way.
The untouchable family had been utterly destroyed, dismantled by the bravery of a seven-year-old boy and the unstoppable force of a mother's love.
