Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The meeting was set for Thursday night at an exclusive, private dining club in downtown San Francisco.

Victoria’s team had spent the afternoon prepping the room. Tiny, high-definition cameras were hidden in the light fixtures and the floral centerpieces. I wore a state-of-the-art wire tap beneath my high-collared black dress, which also perfectly hid the fading scar on my temple.

I sat alone at the long mahogany table, waiting. My hands were cold, but my mind was laser-focused.

The heavy double doors opened, and Adrian and Richard Caldwell walked in. They looked immaculate, wearing tailored suits, exuding the smug, untouchable confidence of royalty entering a peasant's court.

"Well," Richard said, taking a seat opposite me, a patronizing smile on his face. "I'm glad to see sanity has prevailed. You look lovely, my dear. The scar is barely noticeable."

Adrian sat next to him, leaning back with a smug grin. "I told you she’d come around, Dad. She knows what’s good for her."

I forced a tight, submissive smile. "I just want this to be over. I can't sleep. The media is ruining my reputation, and I... I can't fight you anymore."

"A wise realization," Richard nodded smoothly, sliding a stack of legal documents across the table. "This is the deed transfer for the Mission Bay condo to my wife, Evelyn. And here is the non-disclosure agreement. You sign these, and we will issue a press release stating that the tabloid stories were a misunderstanding and that we part ways as friends."

I picked up the pen, letting my hand tremble slightly for effect. I looked at Adrian.

"Before I sign, Adrian... I need to hear you say it," I whispered, looking down at the paper.

"Say what?" Adrian scoffed.

"That you’re sorry," I said, looking up, making my eyes watery. "You smashed a plate over my head. I have stitches. I almost died. And your entire family lied to the police, saying I fell. You made me look insane. I need to know you acknowledge what you did."

Adrian laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "Oh, please. You want an apology? You provoked me! You embarrassed me in front of my entire family over a stupid piece of real estate. You’re lucky I only threw a plate at you."

"Adrian," Richard warned softly, but his own arrogance blinded him to the danger. He looked at me with cold, dead eyes. "Let’s be realistic, my dear. You brought that on yourself. In our family, we do what is necessary to protect our assets. Just like we did with Clara."

My heart leaped. He had taken the bait.

"With Clara?" I asked, keeping my voice shaky. "What do you mean? Clara drowned."

Richard smiled, a chillingly proud expression. "Clara was foolish. She thought she could threaten our family’s empire, too. She thought she could take half of Julian's assets and go to the feds. We handled her. And we can handle you. The difference is, we are giving you a choice to walk away alive. Sign the papers."

I looked at the documents. I looked at Adrian, who was looking at his watch, bored.

I slowly put the pen down.

I leaned back in my chair, the nervous, submissive act evaporating instantly. I met Richard's gaze, my eyes cold as ice.

"No," I said.

Adrian frowned, his temper flaring. "What do you mean, 'no'? Sign the damn paper!"

"I don't think I will," I said softly. I reached into my collar, pulled out the tiny, blinking microphone of the wiretap, and laid it gently on the mahogany table.

Richard’s face drained of color.

"What is that?" Adrian gasped, lunging forward.

Before he could reach me, the double doors of the private dining room burst open.

A dozen federal agents, clad in tactical gear with FBI emblazoned in bold yellow across their chests, poured into the room, firearms drawn. Behind them came Victoria Sterling, alongside a stern-looking federal prosecutor.

"Federal agents! Put your hands on the table! Now!"

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard roared, standing up, his composure finally shattering. "Do you know who I am?!"

"We know exactly who you are, Richard," the lead FBI agent said, stepping forward and slapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "Richard Caldwell and Adrian Caldwell, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and witness tampering."

As Adrian was shoved onto the table, his arms pinned behind his back, he screamed at me, his face twisted in a mask of pure, ugly rage.

"You bitch! You ruined us! I'll kill you! I swear to God I'll kill you!"

May you like

I stood up, adjusting my dress, and looked down at my husband.

"You can try, Adrian," I said calmly. "But you'll have to do it from a federal penitentiary."
