Chapter 4 - The Whispers of the Dead

To catch a predator, you have to let them believe you are the prey.
Under Victoria’s guidance, I began a delicate, dangerous game of chess. We filed a formal petition to delay the hearing for my restraining order, citing "health complications" and my desire to "resolve the matter privately."
To the Caldwells, this looked like total surrender.
Adrian began sending smug text messages, acting as though he had already won.
Adrian: Smart move. Let's talk about the condo transfer. Mom wants the keys by Friday.
I didn't reply, but my silence only fueled their arrogance.
Meanwhile, Victoria’s private investigators were digging deep into the other files on the flash drive. The ledger files were a goldmine. They detailed a massive, multi-million dollar money-laundering scheme where the Caldwells used their vineyard and Julian’s logistics company to funnel illegal offshore funds from shell companies in the Cayman Islands.
But the most heartbreaking discovery was a series of diary entries written by Clara in the weeks leading up to her death.
July 2, 2021: I found the offshore accounts today. Julian thinks I’m stupid. He thinks because I love him, I’ll ignore the smell of rot in his business. But it's not just him. Richard and Adrian are directing all of it. If I try to leave, Julian threatened to destroy my family. I’m terrified. If anything happens to me, I’ve given the backup drive to Maya. She is the only one in this godforsaken family with a soul. I hope she never has to use it.
Reading Clara’s words, tears streamed down my face. She had been exactly where I was—trapped in a web of greedy, sociopathic monsters who viewed people as disposable assets.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed with an encrypted message from an unknown number.
Unknown: They know someone leaked the files. Richard found out a copy of Clara’s ledger is missing from the estate safe. They are questioning everyone. They are looking at me. Help me.
It was Maya.
My heart stopped. If the Caldwells figured out Maya had taken the drive, her life would be in immediate, mortal danger. Julian and Adrian had already proven they had no hesitation when it came to killing a wife who stood in their way.
I immediately called Victoria.
"We have to pull the trigger," I said, panic rising in my throat. "They’re going to hurt Maya. She’s terrified."
"We are almost ready," Victoria replied, her voice calm but urgent. "The federal prosecutors are drafting the indictments as we speak. But we need one more thing to seal the trap. We need Adrian and Richard on tape admitting to the conspiracy and the assault."
"How do we get that?" I asked.
"You're going to agree to meet them," Victoria said. "You're going to tell them you’re ready to sign over the Mission Bay condo and the non-disclosure agreement. But you’ll insist on meeting at a neutral, private dining room in San Francisco—one that we will completely wire with hidden audio and video."
I took a deep breath. Going face-to-face with the man who had smashed a plate over my head, and the father who had orchestrated the cover-up, was the most terrifying thing I could imagine.

But then I thought of Clara. I thought of Maya, trembling in that massive, golden cage in Napa.
"Set it up," I said. "I'll do it."
