Chapter 6 - A Kingdom Built on Love

Three Months LaterThe shattered glass of the Manhattan penthouse had been replaced, but the cold, sterile feeling of the apartment was gone forever.
Brightly colored baby toys sat on the marble floor. A soft, plush rug now covered the center of the living room, and the scent of fresh-cut flowers and vanilla filled the air.
Vincent stood by the glass wall, watching the sunset cast a warm, golden glow over the city. But he wasn't looking at the skyline. He was looking at his reflection—and the woman standing next to him.
Sloan walked up, handing him a warm mug of coffee. She looked beautiful. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, replaced by a radiant, peaceful glow. She wore a simple white sundress, her blonde hair falling softly over her shoulders.
"She's finally down for her nap," Sloan said, leaning her head against his shoulder.
Vincent wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close. "Are you sure? I can go check on her."
Sloan laughed softly. "Vincent, you've checked on her four times in the last hour. She's fine. Marcus has three tactical guards stationed at the building entrance just to watch her stroller."
Vincent smiled, kissing the top of her head. He couldn't help it. After everything they had been through, he refused to let his guard down. Arthur Vance was currently sitting in a maximum-security federal holding facility, facing life without parole. Vance International had been dismantled, its assets liquidated or absorbed by DeVoe Global.
But Vincent didn't care about the corporate victory. His true empire was right here in this room.
"I have something for you," Vincent said softly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
Sloan’s breath hitched. She stepped back as Vincent took her hands.
"Six months ago, I let the world convince me that I was a machine," Vincent said, his eyes filled with an emotion so deep it made Sloan’s tears well up. "I thought building an empire meant being alone. I was wrong. You and Willa are my empire. You are the only thing that matters."
He opened the box, revealing a stunning, custom-designed emerald ring—the color of her eyes—surrounded by a halo of flawless diamonds.
"Sloan Bennett, you broke my heart to save my life. Now, let me spend the rest of my life making sure yours is full of joy. Will you marry me? Again. For real this time."
Sloan didn't answer with words. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a passionate, fierce kiss that wiped away every memory of the pain, the loneliness, and the fear they had endured.
"Yes," she whispered against his lips, tears of happiness blurring her vision. "A thousand times, yes."
From the hallway, a soft, waking coo sounded.
Vincent and Sloan broke the kiss, looking at each other with identical smiles. They walked hand-in-hand into the nursery.
Willa was sitting up in her crib, her bright, beautiful dark eyes wide with wonder. When she saw Vincent, her tiny mouth opened into a wide, toothless smile, and she reached her little hands out toward him.
Vincent reached down, lifting his daughter effortlessly into his strong arms. He held her close, her small head resting perfectly against his shoulder, while Sloan wrapped her arms around them both.
