Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

"Vincent!" Sloan gasped, sprinting to the bassinet and scooping Willa into her arms. The baby woke up, letting out a sharp, frightened cry.

Vincent moved with lethal efficiency. He grabbed a concealed firearm from a hidden panel beneath the dining table—a weapon he had never expected to use in his own home. He pushed Sloan behind him, shielding her and Willa with his own body as the heavy double doors of the penthouse burst open.

Four men in tactical gear stepped into the dim, shadow-filled room, their weapons raised. But they didn't shoot.

Behind them stepped Arthur Vance.

At sixty-five, Vance looked distinguished, wearing a bespoke gray suit, his silver hair perfectly coiffed. He carried a cane, but his step was firm. He looked around the darkened penthouse with a smile of supreme satisfaction.

"Vincent," Arthur sighed, shaking his head. "I must admit, I'm disappointed. Bypassing your security was almost too easy. Your little hacker friend Ethan? He works for me. He always did. How do you think I knew exactly where Sloan was hiding the entire time?"

Sloan let out a horrified gasp behind Vincent. The hacker had been a trap. A way to lure her back to the penthouse, to put both Vincent and Sloan in one place where they could be dealt with simultaneously.

"You killed my father," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a register that made even the tactical guards shift uncomfortably.

"Your father was weak, Vincent," Arthur said smoothly, stepping closer. "He wanted to dissolve the partnership. He wanted to take half of what I built and hand it to you. I couldn't let that happen. But you? You were perfect. A cold, ruthless machine. I shaped you into the billionaire you are today. You built DeVoe Global into a multi-billion-dollar juggernaut, and through our corporate shell companies, half of that wealth belongs to me."

Arthur’s gaze flicked to Sloan, and then to the crying baby in her arms. His eyes turned venomous.

"But then this girl made you soft. You started talking about taking time off. You started smiling. And when she got pregnant, I knew the machine would break. A man with a family is a man with leverage. A man who makes compromises."

Arthur raised his hand, and the two guards on the left aimed their weapons directly at Sloan and Willa.

"Here is how this transaction ends, Vincent," Arthur said, his voice cold as ice. "You will sign over full voting control of DeVoe Global to Vance International tonight. A tragic accident will occur here—a robbery gone wrong. You and your lovely ex-wife won't survive it. But don't worry... I will take the baby. I will raise your daughter to be exactly what you were supposed to be. A weapon without a heart."

"You touch her," Vincent roared, his finger tightening on his trigger, "and I will tear your world apart piece by piece."

"You have no cards left to play, boy," Arthur sneered. "Fire."

Before the guards could pull their triggers, a massive explosion shattered the glass walls of the adjacent terrace.

Flashbang grenades detonated in a blinding sequence of light and sound. Marcus and his elite tactical team swung through the shattered windows, black ropes cutting through the smoke.

Vincent didn't hesitate. He dived to the floor, pulling Sloan and Willa beneath the heavy oak dining table as gunfire erupted over their heads. He wrapped his arms completely around his wife and daughter, using his own back as a shield against flying glass and stray bullets.

Willa was screaming, and Sloan was sobbing, holding the baby against her chest.

"I've got you," Vincent whispered fiercely amidst the chaos, his heart hammering against his ribs. "I've got you. You're safe."

The firefight lasted less than thirty seconds. Marcus’s team, fully prepared for a high-intensity extraction, completely overwhelmed Arthur’s mercenaries.

"Clear!" Marcus’s voice boomed through the smoke.

Vincent stood up, keeping his body between the room and his family. Two guards lay disarmed on the floor, and Arthur Vance was pinned against the wall, a tactical boot pressed firmly into his back, his expensive suit ruined, his face twisted in rage.

"This isn't over, DeVoe!" Arthur spat, blood trickling from his lip. "You can't prove anything! The files are gone! Your father’s death was ruled natural!"

Vincent walked over to the ruined laptop on his desk. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive he had hidden there before Arthur walked in.

"You're right, Arthur. I couldn't prove it," Vincent said, a dark, victorious smile finally breaking across his face. "But when you walked in here bragging about poisoning my father and extortion, my laptop was broadcasting a live, encrypted audio feed directly to the Director of the FBI and the New York District Attorney. I opened the feed the second you called my phone earlier."

Arthur’s face drained of color. His eyes went wide with realization.

"You didn't just confess to a corporate takeover, Arthur," Vincent said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "You just confessed to first-degree murder on a federal wire. Take him away."
