Chapter 6 - The Counter-Strike from the Cell

Though confined behind the concrete walls of the high-security detention facility, Victoria Sterling was far from powerless. A woman who had ruled an empire for decades always had hidden cards, loyal enforcers, and secrets buried deep within the foundations of the city.
Two weeks after the bail hearing, a massive, coordinated cyber-attack struck Sterling Enterprises’ primary operational servers. Within twenty minutes, the trading platforms were paralyzed, logistics manifests for Sterling Shipping were erased, and a massive ransomware demand appeared on every executive terminal.

Inside the command center, Julian and Elena stood over the shoulders of the company's chief technology officers as they desperately tried to contain the digital breach.
"It’s a zero-day exploit, Julian," the lead analyst explained, sweat dripping down his face. "The attackers didn't hack their way in from the outside. They used a master administrative hard-coded backdoor that was built into the software architecture back when the system was deployed in 2012. It can only be activated by a specific, physical alphanumeric key card."
Elena’s eyes widened. "The lakefront estate. The private safe in Victoria’s vault."
"She didn't just hire external hackers," Elena said, looking at Julian. "She gave her personal security detail the code to enter the estate and activate the override terminal before the feds could completely seize the property. She’s trying to force us to withdraw the evidence by destroying the company’s infrastructure in real-time."
"If our ships freeze in the international shipping lanes for more than twenty-four hours, the maritime fines will ruin us," Julian said, his jaw locked in a tight, hard line. "We need to get to the Lake Forest estate right now and physically cut the power to the local server node before the entire network collapses."
"I'm coming with you," Elena said, reaching for her coat.
"No, Elena, it’s too dangerous," Julian protested. "Her private security detail might still be on the property. They are loyal to her payroll, not the company."

"They are loyal to money, Julian," Elena countered, her eyes flashing with absolute determination. "And right now, you control the trust accounts that fund their payroll. I know the layout of her vault better than anyone because your father showed me the blueprints. If we don't go together, you won't find the secondary node in time."
Ten minutes later, flanked by a tactical team from the Chicago Police Department and Agent Vance, Julian and Elena were inside a speeding SUV, racing down the highway toward the sprawling, heavily wooded Sterling estate in Lake Forest. The digital clock on the dashboard was ticking down, and with every passing minute, the Sterling empire lost millions of dollars, the final, desperate convulsion of a dying queen trying to drag her kingdom into the grave with her.
