Chapter 5 - The Path to Healing

With Vanessa securely locked behind bars, the long, quiet process of rebuilding our lives began. I formally filed for divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty, felony fraud, and marital betrayal. Because of the overwhelming criminal evidence, the family court judge immediately suspended all of Vanessa’s claims to alimony, marital assets, or corporate payouts, effectively rendering her legally and financially destitute before her criminal trial even began.

I brought my mother home from the hospital three weeks after the incident. Her physical wounds were healing, but the psychological trauma ran deep. She refused to go into the kitchen or the dining room, terrified that Vanessa would suddenly appear from the shadows with the wooden spoon.

To create a completely fresh environment, I hired a professional renovation crew. Within seven days, they completely gutted the interior of the house, replacing the dark, modern, oppressive color schemes Vanessa had chosen with bright, warm, Mediterranean tones—vibrant creams, soft woods, and massive skylights that flooded the rooms with natural morning sun.

Elena returned to work a week later, her stitches removed, leaving only a faint, silver line above her eyebrow—a permanent medal of her bravery. The first morning she walked into the newly renovated living room, my mother’s face lit up with a joy I hadn't seen in years.

"Elena!" Mom cried out, stretching her fragile arms out from her wheelchair.

Elena immediately rushed forward, kneeling beside the chair and embracing my mother with a tenderness that brought tears to my eyes. "Good morning, Mrs. Marie. Look at you, you look beautiful today. The color in your cheeks is completely back."

"I missed you, child," Mom whispered, holding Elena’s face in her hands. "Every night in the hospital, I prayed you were safe from that horrible woman."

"She can never hurt us again, Mom," I said, walking into the room with a tray of fresh tea. I set it down on the table and looked directly at Elena. "Elena, I want to talk to you about your employment contract."

Elena’s expression turned anxious. She stood up, smoothing down her apron. "Mr. Daniel... if you wish to let me go now that the danger is passed, I understand. I know the house has been through so much drama because of what happened..."

"Let you go?" I looked at her, astonished that she could even think such a thing. "Elena, you saved my mother’s life. You endured physical assault and psychological torture to protect my family while I was blind to the truth. I’m not letting you go. I’ve instructed my legal team to restructure your position. As of today, you are no longer our housekeeper. You are the official Estate Director and Medical Coordinator for my mother’s recovery. Your salary is quadrupled, you have full corporate health insurance, and my firm is taking over the complete sponsorship of your permanent residency visa."

Elena stared at me, her large, dark eyes filling with tears of disbelief. "Mr. Daniel... I cannot accept so much. I only did what was right. Back in my country, we respect our elders. It is our duty."

"And it is my duty to ensure that bravery doesn't go unrewarded," I said softly, stepping closer to her. For the first time, as I looked into her eyes without the shadow of crisis or trauma, I noticed how incredibly beautiful she was—not just the fierce, protective spirit within her, but the soft, gentle grace she carried in every movement.

My mother reached up, taking Elena’s hand and placing it firmly inside mine. "Accept it, Elena," Mom said, a knowing, beautiful smile spreading across her tired face. "This family needs you. Daniel needs you, even if his big engineer brain hasn't fully realized it yet."
