Chapter 4 - The Archive of Horrors

The state prosecutor’s office was located in a gray, imposing building in the civic center. Two weeks had passed since Vanessa’s arrest, and her defense team—funded by a wealthy uncle who hadn't yet seen the evidence—was aggressively pushing for an emergency bail reduction, claiming Vanessa was a victim of a "vengeful, paranoid husband" who was using financial coercion to isolate her.

I sat in a conference room with Assistant District Attorney Sarah Jenkins. On the large projector screen against the wall, we were systematically reviewing the one hundred and twelve days of footage I had downloaded from my private server.

"What we have here, Daniel, is more than enough for a standard assault conviction," Sarah said, her expression grim as she watched a clip from two months prior, showing Vanessa slapping my mother’s hands away from a plate of food. "But to ensure she receives maximum sentencing without the possibility of an easy plea bargain, we need to establish a definitive pattern of pre-meditated physical and psychological torture."

I clicked on a video file from a Tuesday afternoon in October. The camera inside the kitchen captured Vanessa standing near the refrigerator, holding a glass of water. My mother was sitting in her wheelchair, her head slumped, her voice faint.

"Please, Vanessa... just half a glass," my mother whispered on the tape. "My tongue is so dry. The medication makes me so thirsty."

Vanessa didn't answer. Instead, she took the glass, walked over to the kitchen sink, and poured the water slowly down the drain right in front of my mother’s face. "If you want water, old woman, you sign the transfer deed for the lake house. Until then, you can survive on whatever moisture is left in that useless brain of yours."

Sarah Jenkins gasped, shielding her eyes for a second. "My God... that is attempted murder by deprivation. She was intentionally trying to induce another stroke."

The next clip showed Elena entering the kitchen moments later. The young housekeeper immediately noticed my mother’s distress, rushed to the refrigerator, and poured a fresh glass of water, handing it to my mother despite Vanessa’s furious protests.

"You touch that old bitch again, Elena, and I’ll have your visa revoked before the end of the week," Vanessa threatened on the recording, stepping into Elena’s personal space. "You are a servant in this house. You see nothing, you hear nothing, and you do exactly what I tell you, or you’ll be on a plane back to your village with a criminal record."

Elena didn't back down. On the screen, the twenty-six-year-old woman stood like an unyielding shield between Vanessa and my mother, her voice soft but incredibly firm. "You can send me away, Mrs. Vance. But as long as I am employed by Mr. Daniel, I will not allow you to starve his mother. It is against God, and it is against humanity."

Watching the footage, a profound, overwhelming emotion washed over me. For eight months, while I was living in luxury in a corporate compound in Saudi Arabia, believing my family was safe, this young woman from a small town in Eastern Europe had been fighting a daily, heroic war against a wealthy, vicious predator to protect my mother. She had endured threats, insults, and ultimately physical violence, all out of a pure, unyielding sense of decency.

"The grand jury is going to indict her on twenty-four separate felony counts, Daniel," Sarah Jenkins said, shutting off the projector. "And based on this footage, Chad Harrington is going down as an unindicted co-conspirator for corporate fraud. Vanessa isn't getting bail. She’s going straight to a maximum-security holding facility until the trial concludes."

"Make sure she gets the small cell, Sarah," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "The one without a view. I want her to know exactly what it feels like to have her world reduced to a cage."
