Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Holloways

The front doors of the Lake Forest estate were pushed open by federal agents dressed in dark windbreakers marked with gold 'FBI' lettering, accompanied by state troopers.
"Grant Holloway? Margaret Holloway?" the lead special agent announced, displaying a federal arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, identity theft, tax evasion, and grand larceny."
Grant fell to his knees on the very rug where my daughter had bled three days ago. He wept uncontrollably, blubbering and pointing his finger at his mother. "It was her! It was my mother! She made me do it! She managed the books!"
"Grant, you coward!" Margaret screamed, turning on her own son like a rabid animal, slapping him across the face as agents stepped in to separate them. "I did everything to save you from your gambling debts! You pathetic, useless boy!"
The agents handcuffed Grant behind his back, dragging him to his feet. As they led him past us toward the door, he looked at Hannah, his eyes desperate, pleading, and pathetic.
"Hannah... please tell them!" Grant sobbed. "I loved you! We’re husband and wife!"
Hannah stood tall, looking down at him with utter calm.
"You were never a husband, Grant," Hannah said clearly, her voice echoed in the marble foyer. "You were just a bully hiding behind your mother's money. And now, you have nothing."
Margaret Holloway was handcuffed next. Her pearl necklace snapped during the scuffle, sending white beads cascading across the cold floor like falling tears. As she was escorted out the grand entrance, news cameras from every major station in Chicago were waiting outside the iron gates, capturing her humiliating arrest on live television.
By 6:00 PM that evening, the news hit every network across the country:
"HOLLOWAY SELECT MARKETS COLLAPSES AMID MASSIVE FRAUD ARRESTS; BANKRUPTCY DECLARED."
"FORMER CEO GRANT HOLLOWAY AND MOTHER MARGARET FACING UP TO 30 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON."
Inside Carter’s Table, the atmosphere was electric.
The diner was packed to the brim with our loyal regular customers, union workers, local shop owners, and news reporters. People were celebrating, laughing, and clinking coffee mugs together. Sal the mechanic brought a giant tray of fresh pastries, and Big Mike Rossi brought fifty union members to buy dinner for everyone in the room.
Arthur Vance and Sarah walked in, carrying a legal folder.
"Evelyn, Hannah," Arthur smiled, sitting down at the counter. "The judge just granted an emergency expedited divorce decree for Hannah. Furthermore, the federal bankruptcy court has ruled that all seized Holloway corporate assets will be liquidated, and a substantial portion of the restitution fund—over eight million dollars—will be awarded directly to Hannah for physical abuse, fraud, and emotional distress."
Hannah stared at the legal document, tears finally streaming down her face—not of pain, but of pure relief and freedom.
"Mom..." Hannah whispered, throwing her arms around my neck. "We did it. It’s finally over."

I held my daughter tight, closing my eyes, feeling the heavy burden that had weighed on my heart for years finally lift away into the evening air.
"It’s over, baby," I whispered back. "Nobody will ever hurt you again."
