Chapter 4 - The Showdown

Friday afternoon, 2:45 PM. Hour 71 of the seventy-two-hour deadline.
The grand living room of the Holloway mansion in Lake Forest was suffocatingly tense. Margaret Holloway sat on her sofa, dressed in a sharp black designer suit, holding a folder containing the forged legal papers designed to ruin Hannah. Grant stood by the marble fireplace, nervously sipping scotch, checking his watch every ten seconds.
"They have fifteen minutes," Grant muttered, his voice shaky. "If she doesn't come crawling back through that door by 3:00 PM, I’m calling the police and having Hannah arrested for corporate theft."
"Relax, Grant," Margaret said coldly, though her own hands were trembling. "Evelyn Carter is a mother. She will break. She has no choice."
At precisely 2:58 PM, the heavy double front doors of the mansion swung open.
Grant and Margaret jumped to their feet.
I walked into the foyer. I wasn't wearing an apron or flour-dusted shoes. I wore a sharp, tailored wool coat, my head held high, stepping onto their polished marble floor with firm, unyielding steps. Behind me walked Hannah, dressed in an elegant blazer, her posture straight and proud. Beside us stood Arthur Vance and Sarah, carrying leather briefcases.
Grant let out a forced, arrogant laugh, trying to mask his terror. "Look who showed up! Right on time, Evelyn! I see you brought your little legal team to witness your surrender!"
Margaret stepped forward, raising her chin haughtily. "You have two minutes left, Evelyn. Where are your knees? Where is the apology?"
I stopped in the middle of the room, exactly where my daughter had been kneeling in her own blood three days ago. I looked at Margaret, then at Grant.
"I didn't come here to apologize, Margaret," I said softly. "I came to keep my promise."
Grant sneered, pulling out his paper folder. "You think you still have leverage?! Look at this! We have documents proving Hannah embezzled five million dollars from Holloway Select Markets! If you don't sign over Carter’s Table and dismiss all media stories right now, your daughter goes to prison for twenty years!"
Arthur Vance took a step forward, pulling a stack of heavy white folders from his briefcase and tossing them onto the glass coffee table with a loud THUD.
"Mr. Holloway," Arthur said in his booming courtroom voice. "Those documents you are holding are forged. And unfortunately for you, we spent the last forty-eight hours with the Chief Document Examiner for the FBI."
Grant froze, his face draining of all color. "What... what are you talking about?"
"We ran a forensic audit on the holding company registered in Hannah’s name," Sarah announced, opening her laptop. "Not only did we prove her signature was forged using Margaret’s private notary stamp, but we also traced the electronic IP address of every fraudulent bank transfer directly to Grant’s personal laptop."
Margaret’s glass slipped from her hand, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering into pieces. "That... that's a lie!"
"It's not a lie, Margaret," I said calmly, taking a step closer to her. "The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Illinois State Attorney General have spent the morning reviewing these files. The bank has officially revoked your loan, and your corporate bankruptcy was filed twenty minutes ago."
Grant stumbled backward, clutching his chest, gasping for air as if he had been punched. "No... no, no, no! This can't be happening!"
"You gave me seventy-two hours, Grant," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "You thought I was just a broke old woman who cooks chicken pot pies. You forgot that a mother who built her own life from nothing will burn down your entire world before she lets you hurt her child."
At that exact moment, the heavy iron gates outside the mansion groaned open.
Sirens echoed in the distance, flashing red and blue lights cutting through the fog outside the grand glass windows. Four black SUVs pulled onto the driveway, followed by three local police cruisers.
Grant looked out the window, his eyes wide with sheer horror. "Mom... Mom, the police are here!"
"Evelyn... please!" Margaret suddenly dropped her haughty act, rushing toward me, grabbing my sleeves with frantic, shaking hands. "Please! We can work this out! We’ll give Hannah a full divorce settlement! Ten million dollars! Just call off the federal agents!"

I gently, firmly removed her trembling hands from my coat.
"You told me on Tuesday that my daughter was a nobody, Margaret," I said softly, stepping back beside Hannah. "You were wrong. She is my daughter. And you are about to learn what happens when you touch a mother's child."
