Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Century

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity for three straight weeks. The media labeled it the "Mansion Maid Trial," and every detail of Evelynâs cruelty was laid bare before a jury of twelve ordinary citizens.
Evelynâs defense team tried everything. They claimed she suffered from severe personality disorders; they claimed I was an rebellious teenager who fabricated the story for attention; they even tried to blame the entire setup on the fired household staff.
But their defense collapsed completely when Chloe took the stand.
Devastated by the fact that her mother had been willing to leave her to drown at the pier, Chloe had reached a plea bargain with the state. Dressed in a simple gray prison jumpsuit, stripped of her makeup and luxury accessories, Chloe wept openly as she confessed to the entire conspiracy.
"My mother forced me to help her," Chloe sobbed into the microphone, refusing to look at Evelyn, who was glaring at her from the defense table. "She said Maya didn't deserve the Vance legacy. She made me edit the videos to fool Mr. Vance. Every time Maya cried, my mother told me that if I ever spoke up, she would disown me and leave me penniless. I was a coward. I watched my sister starve while I lived in luxury. I am so sorry, Maya."
The jury didn't need long to deliberate. After less than two hours, the foreperson stood up to read the verdict.
"On the counts of human trafficking, aggravated child abuse, unlawful confinement, extortion, and tampering with evidence... we find the defendant, Evelyn Vance, guilty on all charges."
Evelyn didn't cry. She sat frozen, her face a pale mask of bitter defeat.

The judge, a stern older woman with no tolerance for aristocratic entitlement, ordered Evelyn to stand for sentencing. "Evelyn Vance, your cruelty is compounded by the immense wealth and privilege you possessed. Instead of providing sanctuary to a grieving child, you utilized your resources to construct a private torture chamber. I sentence you to thirty-five years in the state maximum security penitentiary, without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, under the civil forfeiture act, every asset in your name, including all offshore accounts, is hereby seized and transferred to the Maya Vance Recovery Foundation."
As the bailiffs led Evelyn away through the side doors, she finally broke down, letting out a desperate, echoing wail as the reality of her life sentence settled in. She would spend the rest of her days in a tiny, grey concrete cell, scrubbing the prison floors herselfâa devastating poetic justice for the cruelty she believed she had hidden forever.
