Chapter 3 - The Blackmail Gambit

By the next morning, the Vance Manor was surrounded by police cruisers and luxury black sedans belonging to my father’s high-priced legal team. Evelyn had been formally arrested, photographed in handcuffs on the front porch for the entire neighborhood to see.

However, by noon, she was out on a multi-million-dollar bail, funded by a secret offshore account my father’s auditors hadn't managed to freeze yet. She and Chloe had holed up in a luxury penthouse downtown, protected by a ruthless defense attorney named Victor Cross.

I sat in my father’s study, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, drinking hot tea that our newly hired housekeeper had prepared. For the first time in years, I didn't have to look over my shoulder, but the psychological scars were loud. Every sudden noise made me flinch.

Richard was pacing behind his desk, his brow furrowed as he reviewed legal documents. Suddenly, his computer chimed with an incoming alert. An encrypted email had just arrived from an unknown address.

"Richard, look at this," he murmured, his face hardening as he clicked the attachment.

I walked over to stand beside him. The email contained a video file. When Richard hit play, my breath hitched. It was a video from five years ago, taken right before my mother passed away. It showed my mother, frail and sick in her hospital bed, arguing bitterly with Richard about his constant absence. But the video had been maliciously edited. Through clever audio manipulation and spliced footage, it made it appear as though Richard was aggressively threatening my mother, throwing a glass against the wall, and shouting that he wished she would die.

Below the video was a simple text message from Evelyn’s lawyer: “Mr. Vance. If the criminal charges against my client are not dropped immediately, and if a settlement of fifty percent of the Vance Estate is not agreed upon within forty-eight hours, this video will be leaked to every major news outlet and the federal regulatory boards. Your public image will be destroyed, your stock will plummet, and the authorities will reopen the investigation into your late wife’s cause of death. Let’s see who the world believes.”

"That's a lie!" I cried out, my hands trembling. "I was there that day! Mom was upset because she missed him, but Dad never raised his hand to her. He was crying, he held her until she fell asleep! Evelyn took the security footage from the hospital room and twisted it!"

"I know, sweetheart," Richard said, his voice surprisingly calm, though the veins in his neck were pulsing. "Evelyn’s brother was the chief of security at that private clinic. She must have had this footage saved for years, waiting for the perfect moment to leverage it against me."

"What are we going to do?" I asked, panic rising in my chest. "If the stock crashes, if they accuse you of hurting Mom..."

Richard placed his hands on my shoulders, looking deeply into my eyes. For the first time, I saw the true weight of the man who had built an empire from nothing. "Evelyn thinks my wealth is my vulnerability. She thinks I care more about my company than the truth. She underestimates what a father will do when his child has been harmed."

He picked up his phone and dialed Detective Harrison, the lead investigator on my abuse case. "Detective? I just received a blackmail attempt from the defendant. I’m forwarding the encrypted file to your digital forensics unit. I want to add extortion and tampering with evidence to Evelyn Vance's indictment. And call a press conference for tomorrow morning. I’m going to show the world the video myself."
