Chapter 3 - The Counter-Strike

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the Sterling estate was in utter chaos.

Jason Sterling woke up with a pounding headache, sitting in his living room surrounded by overturned furniture. The black-suited men from the previous night were gone, but in their place stood three federal marshals and a team of auditors from the Internal Revenue Service.

Eleanor sat on the sofa, her face pale, her hands shaking violently as she held a stack of federal sub-poenas.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Jason screamed, storming toward the lead marshal. "Do you know who I am? I am Jason Sterling! My mother sits on the board of the regional bank! Call Chief Harrison immediately!"

"Chief Harrison is currently in federal custody, Mr. Sterling," the marshal replied coldly, displaying his badge. "He was arrested two hours ago at his residence for bribery, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit fraud."

"What?!" Jason staggered back, clutching his head. "That's impossible!"

"Furthermore," the auditor stepped forward, opening a leather briefcase, "as of 6:00 AM today, all domestic and foreign accounts associated with Sterling Enterprises, as well as your personal accounts, have been frozen by order of the Federal District Court pending an investigation into grand larceny, racketeering, and human trafficking."

Eleanor let out a sharp gasp, collapsing back against the cushions. "Human trafficking? That’s absurd! We did nothing of the sort!"

"Holding an individual against their will, inflicting bodily harm, and attempting to force the execution of financial documents under duress falls squarely under federal extortion and hostage laws, Mrs. Sterling," the marshal stated sternly.

At that moment, the heavy oak front doors pushed open.

I walked into the foyer, dressed not in my old gardener jacket, but in a tailored dark charcoal suit, accompanied by two of the country’s most powerful corporate trial attorneys. Behind us came a team of movers carrying heavy wooden crates.

Jason’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "You... you old bastard! What did you do?!"

He lunged toward me, but before he could cross half the distance, two armed marshals slammed him onto the polished floor, putting him in heavy steel handcuffs.

"Get your hands off me!" Jason roared, his face pressed flat against the cold marble. "Dad! Tell them! He's just a gardener!"

I walked over slowly, standing directly over Jason, looking down at him with utter disdain.

"I let you believe I was a gardener, Jason, because I wanted my daughter to love you for who you were, not for what my family possessed," I said, my voice echoing in the grand hall. "I spent three years trimming your hedges, cleaning your fountains, and watching you talk down to me. I endured your insults because Sarah was happy. But the moment you laid a hand on her, you ceased to be my son-in-law. You became an enemy objective."

"You... who are you?" Eleanor whimpered from the sofa, staring at me in horror. "Who are you really, Arthur?"

One of my attorneys, a sharp woman named Victoria Vance, stepped forward and dropped a heavy legal brief onto the coffee table.

"This is Arthur Vance," Victoria said calmly. "Former Commander of the Special Security Operations Group, Senior Partner of Vance Global Enterprises, and sole owner of the mortgage holding company that purchased the Sterling estate’s debt three hours ago."

Eleanor’s eyes nearly bulged out of her sockets. "You... you bought our debt?"

"Every single cent of it," Victoria replied with a cold smile. "The Sterling estate, the cars in your garage, the clothes in your closet, and the very chair you are sitting on now belong entirely to Mr. Vance. And he is exercising his right to evict you immediately."

"You can't do this!" Jason screamed, struggling against the handcuffs. "This is my home!"

"It was your home," I corrected him coldly. "Now, it is crime scene evidence."

I signaled to the movers. "Clear everything out. Every piece of luxury furniture, every painting, every piece of jewelry purchased with stolen money. Strip this house down to the bare walls."

"Where are we supposed to go?!" Eleanor shrieked, tears smearing her expensive makeup as marshals escorted her toward the door.

"You, Eleanor, will be attending a bail hearing at the federal courthouse," I said, walking past her toward the front porch. "And as for Jason... he will be spending the foreseeable future in a state holding facility waiting for his trial."

As the police cars pulled away with Jason and Eleanor in the backseat, shouting obscenities into the wind, I stood on the porch of the magnificent estate. The sun was rising higher in the sky, burning away the morning mist.

The battle was far from over—the Sterlings had powerful allies in the corporate underworld who would try to fight back—but the fortress they had built out of cruelty and lies had suffered its first catastrophic collapse.
