Chapter 2 - The Web of Deceit

The private medical wing at St. Jude’s Hospital was completely cleared out under my personal security protocol. The best trauma doctors and specialists in the state were working on Sarah.

I stood behind the glass partition of her room, watching the IV drip feed fluids and antibiotics into her veins. Marcus stood beside me, holding a black leather folder containing the preliminary findings gathered from the Sterling estate.

"Her fever is breaking, Commander," Marcus reported quietly. "The doctors say she was suffering from severe malnutrition, physical exhaustion, and low-dose chemical sedation. They were slipping heavy tranquilizers into her tea to keep her compliant."

My jaw clenched so hard I felt the muscle ache. "The financial papers?"

Marcus opened the folder. "It’s worse than we thought, sir. Jason Sterling didn't just marry Sarah out of affection. The Sterling Group is secretly bankrupt. They lost over eighty million dollars in bad offshore investments last year. They targeted Sarah because of the silent trust fund left to her by her mother's family—the Vance Estate."

I looked down at the documents. The Vance Estate was an ancient, massive agricultural and real estate trust worth well over two hundred million dollars. When I retired from active service, I had purposefully hidden my true wealth behind my late wife’s family name, choosing to live a humble life as a small-town landscaper to protect Sarah from the dark, dangerous world I had operated in for forty years.

I wanted her to have a peaceful, normal life. But my desire to keep her safe from my past had inadvertently exposed her to monsters of a different kind.

"They needed her signature to liquidate the trust and transfer the assets into a shell company controlled by Eleanor Sterling," Marcus continued. "When Sarah refused and began asking questions about missing funds, they isolated her. Cut off her phone, fired her personal staff, and began the physical abuse."

"And the town officials?" I asked. "How did Eleanor keep this quiet?"

"The local police chief, Chief Harrison, is on Eleanor’s payroll," Marcus replied, handing me a list of bank transfers. "So is the county judge who was prepared to sign an emergency order declaring Sarah mentally unfit, which would have granted Jason full legal guardianship over her person and her assets by tomorrow morning."

I closed the folder with a sharp snap.

"They built a cage around my daughter," I said, my voice dripping with cold fire. "They used the law, money, and corruption as their bars. We won't just break the cage, Marcus. We are going to burn the entire forest down."

"What are your orders, Commander?"

"Initiate Phase Two," I said. "Bring in my legal team from Chicago. I want full frozen-asset orders on every account tied to the Sterling Group by dawn. Contact the Department of Justice’s financial crimes division—the real ones, not Eleanor’s local lapdogs. Tell them the dossier on the Sterling offshore accounts is ready for delivery."

"And Jason Sterling, sir?"

"Jason thinks he is a predator because he carries a bat," I sneered. "Let him wake up tomorrow morning to find out he doesn't own the clothes on his back."

Just then, the door to the medical room opened, and Sarah stirred. Her eyes fluttered open, looking around in confusion until they met mine through the glass. I pushed the door open and stepped inside, sitting on the stool beside her bed.

"Dad..." she whispered, her voice rough. She reached up, touching the ragged, uneven edges of her hair where Eleanor had cut it. Tears welled up in her eyes. "Look at me... I look hideous. I was so weak... I let them do this..."

I took her hand, holding it gently between both of mine.

"You are the strongest person I know, Sarah," I said, my eyes burning with pride and fierce love. "You fought them off for months without signing those papers. You protected your mother’s legacy, and you survived. They tried to cut your hair to humiliate you, but hair grows back. What they took from you—your peace, your dignity—I will bring back ten times over."

"Jason said... he said you were nobody," Sarah sobbed, pulling my hand to her cheek. "He said you were just a broke old man who worked in the dirt..."

"Let them believe whatever they want, my sweet girl," I smiled softly, wiping away a single tear from her cheek. "Because when a shadow comes for them, they won't even see the blow landing."
