Chapter 9 - The Final Stand at the Mansion

The Vance family mansion in Lake Forest was an empty shell. The grand rooms that had once hosted governors, CEOs, and international elite were filled with moving stickers and wrapped furniture. A historic auction house was scheduled to begin liquidating the artwork and antique collections the following morning to pay off the corporate creditors.

I walked through the grand foyer, holding Sophie's hand. We needed to sign the final transfer documents for the property, as the independent trustees had approved the sale of the house to fund a permanent medical and psychological trust for Sophie.

Suddenly, a shadow moved from the dark corners of the grand library.

My mother stood there. She was wearing an old silk robe, her hair unwashed, her eyes wild and bloodshot. She held an expensive crystal decanter in her shaking hand, her face a mask of bitter, unhinged resentment.

"You think you won, don't you?" she spat, her voice echoing through the empty, cavernous house. She stepped out into the light, pointing a manicured, trembling finger at me. "You ruined my son! You took away his future, his wife, his company! You’ve always been infected with jealousy, Evelyn! From the day your grandfather looked at your stupid accounting logs, you’ve been trying to tear this family down!"

I stepped in front of Sophie, shielding her from the sight of the crumbling matriarch. "Nobody ruined Preston except you and father, Mother. You raised a monster, you protected him when he hurt people, and you taught him that his wealth made him God. The world just reminded him that he's ordinary."

"He was the heir!" she shrieked, smashing the crystal decanter against the marble floor, sending shards flying across the room—a horrific echo of the champagne glass that had shattered on the night of the wedding. "He was supposed to carry the name! You are nothing but a common, ungrateful girl! You don't deserve a single cent of the Vance legacy!"

She lunged forward, her fingers clawing at the air, entirely consumed by the madness of her lost status.

But before she could reach us, two private security guards—hired by Clara Sterling to protect us during the transition—stepped smoothly out of the main hallway, intercepting her arms and pinning her gently but firmly against the wall.

"Eleanor Vance," Officer Rodriguez’s voice boomed from the front entrance. She walked into the foyer, holding a crisp white document. "I have a warrant for your arrest for felony perjury and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Step away from the victims."

As the handcuffs clicked around my mother’s wrists, she didn't look like a high-society queen anymore. She looked like a desperate, broken woman who had spent her entire life worshipping an illusion, only to find herself buried beneath the ruins of her own creation.

I didn't watch them lead her out. I turned to Sophie, lifting her up into my arms. "Let's go home, sweetheart. This place doesn't belong to us anymore."
