Chapter 5 - The Legal Fortress

"Ms. Vance? My name is Clara Sterling," the woman said as I opened the door an inch. "I'm the managing partner at Sterling & Associates. We specialize in high-profile civil rights and child advocacy law."
I looked at her warily. "I can't afford you, Ms. Sterling. My parents just fired me and canceled my bank accounts."
Clara Sterling smiled, a warm, fierce expression that reached her eyes. "I don't want your money, Evelyn. I watched that video this morning, and then I spent three hours reviewing your family's corporate filings. What your brother did is monstrous, but what your parents are doing to cover it up is a systemic abuse of power. My firm is taking your case pro bono. We aren't just going to defend you against their custody suit—we are going to dismantle them."
We sat at my kitchen table surrounded by half-packed boxes. Clara laid out a series of financial documents that she had pulled from public registries.
"Your mother threatened you with the Vance Family Trust," Clara explained, tapping a finger on a corporate diagram. "But here is what she didn't tell you. The trust was established by your grandfather, Charles Vance. He was a decent man who built the foundation of the company. According to the original 1994 charter, the trust contains a strict 'Morality and Reputational Clause.' If any principal beneficiary is indicted for a violent felony or acts in a way that causes severe financial detriment to the family legacy, their voting rights and access to the trust assets are automatically frozen."
I gasped. "Preston doesn't know?"
"Preston and your father have been playing fast and loose with the company accounts for years," Clara said, her eyes flashing with anticipation. "They’ve treated the trust like a personal piggy bank. But now that Preston has a formal felony indictment hanging over his head, and the stock is tanking, the secondary board members—the independent trustees who actually protect the money—are terrified. If we file a civil suit for damages on behalf of Sophie tomorrow, we can trigger an audit of the entire trust."

"They wanted to make me homeless," I whispered, the realization washing over me. "They were trying to force me to sign before the trustees found out about the clause."
"Exactly," Clara said, leaning forward. "They aren't fighting from a position of strength, Evelyn. They are cornered animals. They know that if you don't back down, Preston is going to prison, and your parents are going to lose control of the multi-billion-dollar empire they value more than their own flesh and blood."
