Chapter 3 - the viper’s nest

valerie stood frozen in the center of the foyer, the red mark on her cheek glowing brightly against her pale skin. "dad... what are you talking about? i did this for us! for the merger!"
"shut up!" senator vance roared, his composure completely shattered. "shut your mouth!"
i stepped forward, handing a thick manila folder to detective hoyt and another copy to the federal agent standing beside the senator.
"six months ago," i said, my voice echoing coldly in the space, "valerie approached me at a charity gala. she pursued me aggressively, positioned herself as a loving potential stepmother to lily, and pushed for a quick, quiet marriage. I found it suspicious that a senator's daughter would be so desperate to marry a widowed tech mogul within ninety days."
valerie glared at me, her teeth grit. "you wanted a wife!"
"i wanted to know why your father's offshore accounts in panama suddenly received twelve million dollars from a dummy corporation linked to vance capital three days before our wedding," i corrected her.
senator vance closed his eyes, bowing his head in defeat.
"my private intelligence team tracked the money trail," i continued, addressing detective hoyt. "senator vance was bankrupt. his real estate holdings were worthless, and he was being blackmailed by an overseas syndicate. valerie agreed to marry me, insert herself into my estate, and execute a clause in my prenuptial agreement that granted her temporary guardianship of lily’s $200 million trust fund in the event of my unexpected death or incapacitation."
valerie’s breath caught. "how... how do you know about the trust clause?"
"because i wrote the prenuptial agreement, valerie," i said, a cruel, mocking smile finally touching my lips. "did you really think a billionaire who built his entire empire on cyber-defense and predictive intelligence wouldn't run a background check on the woman sleeping in his bed?"
i stepped closer to her, lowering my voice so only she could hear. "i let you think you were tricking me. i let you think you were turning my daughter against me. i wanted to catch your father’s entire network in the act of corporate espionage. but you got impatient, didn't you? you realized i wasn't dying fast enough from the slow metallic poison you were slipping into my evening scotch."
detective hoyt snapped his head toward me. "poison?"
"vanguard compound 44-b," i said, looking at the federal agent. "a synthetic trace toxin. i’ve been pouring every drink she made me into a collection vial for the past six weeks. the state lab already has the samples, along with her fingerprints on the decanter."
valerie’s knees gave out. if the two officers hadn't been holding her arms, she would have collapsed onto the marble floor.
"you... you knew all along?" valerie whispered, tears of horror finally spilling down her cheeks. "you knew about the scotch?"
"i knew everything," i said softly. "the only thing i didn't anticipate was that you would be monster enough to try to throw my six-year-old child off a balcony when you realized your poison wasn't working fast enough to stop my london return."
lily walked back into the foyer, holding the hand of the female EMT. she looked at valerie, not with fear anymore, but with the quiet, profound clarity of a child who had seen the monster behind the mask.

"you told me mommy in heaven didn't love me," lily said, her small voice ringing out with unbelievable strength. "but daddy loves me. and daddy came home."
valerie couldn't hold lily’s gaze. she looked away, sobbing hysterically as detective hoyt dragged her toward the waiting police car, followed closely by her disgraced father in federal custody.
