Chapter 2 - the paper empire

the screeching of police tires outside echoed through the thick glass of the estate's floor-to-ceiling windows. four squad cars and an emergency medical unit pulled up to the main gate, their red and blue lights flashing rhythmically against the pristine white facade of the mansion.

valerie’s confidence, though severely battered, began to reform like a toxic oil slick. she straightened her designer blazer, smoothed her skirt, and glared at me with pure venom.

"you think a video clip proves attempted murder, daniel?" she hissed, her voice dropping all pretense of sweetness. "my father is senator richard vance. my legal team will have that footage suppressed before the preliminary hearing even starts. chain of custody? illegal surveillance of a spouse without consent? you just handed me the leverage i needed to file for an emergency divorce and take half of whitaker global."

i didn't even blink. "you still think this is about money, valerie."

"it’s always about money, darling," she sneered, taking out a compact mirror to check her lipstick despite the chaos. "you married me because your board wanted a respectable, high-society mother figure to polish your public image after your first wife died. I married you for the estate and the trust funds. let's not pretend we were a fairytales-and-romance couple. you arrest me, and i tear your life's work to ground in court."

the heavy oak front doors unlocked with an electronic chime as i authorized access for lead detective marcus hoyt and his team. eight armed officers and two paramedics burst into the grand foyer, weapons drawn down until they assessed the scene.

"mr. whitaker!" detective hoyt called out, his eyes darting between me holding lily and valerie standing near the pillar. "we received your automated distress beacon and federal priority override code. what happened here?"

"paramedics first, detective," i said calmly, gesturing toward lily.

two female EMTs approached gently. lily clung to me at first, but after i kissed her forehead and whispered that daddy was right here and wouldn't leave her side, she allowed them to carry her to the mobile medical unit in the foyer to check her wrists and vitals.

with lily safely out of earshot, i turned to hoyt. "detective, my wife, valerie vance-whitaker, just attempted to murder my daughter by throwing her off the third-floor east balcony."

"that is an outrageous libelous lie!" valerie shouted, stepping toward the officers with her hands raised in theatrical innocence. "officer, my husband is experiencing a severe psychiatric episode caused by extreme sleep deprivation and work stress! he locked me in this house! he's framing me!"

detective hoyt didn't take the bait. he was a veteran investigator who knew my late father and knew the weight of the whitaker name. "mr. whitaker, do you have evidence?"

i pointed to the six wall displays still looping the crystal-clear footage of the event.

hoyt and his officers looked up. the room went dead quiet. one of the younger officers gasped as the video showed valerie’s hands intentionally pushing six-year-old lily’s fingers off the railing. the intent was absolute, clear, and unassailable.

hoyt turned slowly toward valerie, his face hardening into stone. "cuff her."

"what?!" valerie shrieked, backing away as two officers grabbed her arms. "don't you dare touch me! do you know who my father is?! call my father right now!"

"your father already knows, valerie," a sharp, stern voice called out from the open doorway.

everyone turned. stepping into the foyer was senator richard vance himself, flanked by two federal agents in dark suits. but he didn't look like a savior coming to rescue his daughter. his face was gray, his suit rumpled, and his eyes filled with sheer terror.

"dad!" valerie cried out, struggling against the handcuffs. "dad, tell these idiots who we are! daniel has lost his mind! he’s using house cameras to fake a scene!"

senator vance walked up to his daughter, raised his hand, and slapped her across the face with a loud, ringing crack that echoed off the high marble ceilings.

valerie stumbled back, staring at her father in total shock, clutching her reddened cheek. "dad...?"

"you stupid, greedy girl," senator vance whispered, his voice trembling with rage and ruin. "you didn't just ruin yourself. you just brought down our entire family."
