Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The transition from the grand hall of Blackthorn Manor to the high-security ward of Vance Medical Center was seamless.
I lay in a private room overlooking the sparkling, rain-slicked skyline of Chicago. The pain in my back had subsided into a dull, manageable ache, thanks to the advanced skin-regeneration treatments my father’s medical team had applied. I was wrapped in soft, clean silk, a stark contrast to the blood-soaked clothes I had been wearing hours ago.
The door opened quietly, and Arthur stepped inside. He had changed into a clean suit, but the dark circles under his eyes revealed he hadn't slept a wink.
"How is my girl?" he asked gently, sitting on the edge of my bed and taking my hand.
"I'm alive, Dad," I said, offering him a weak but genuine smile. "Is... is it over?"
"The first phase is," Arthur said, his fingers gently stroking my hair. "Nathan and Celeste are currently in federal holding. Because of the level of security risk associated with my firm's data, they are being held under a special administrative measure. No bail. No visitors. No lawyers from their corporate firm."
I let out a long, shaky breath. "And the sapphire pendant?"
"The audio and video recordings of the assault are already in the hands of the district attorney," Arthur’s voice hardened. "But Nathan’s legal team is already trying to spin a narrative. They are claiming that you were mentally unstable, that you self-inflicted those wounds, and that the audio was deep-faked by my security firm to force a corporate takeover."
I scoffed, my chest tightening. "Of course. He’s a narcissist. He’ll never admit he’s lost."
"He thinks he still has a card to play," Arthur said, pulling out his phone and showing me a news article.
The headline read: ASHFORD GLOBAL TRANSFERRED TO MYSTERIOUS BOARD OF TRUSTEES AMIDST CEO ARREST.
"What does this mean?" I asked, looking up at him.
"Before Nathan was arrested, Celeste managed to trigger a fail-safe clause in their corporate charter," my father explained. "In the event of his legal incapacitation, seventy percent of the company's voting shares are automatically transferred to a blind trust controlled by a foreign entity called The Obsidian Group. We don't know who owns Obsidian yet, but they are already filing motions to release Nathan on a diplomatic immunity loophole."
A cold dread washed over me. "Diplomatic immunity? How?"
"Celeste's family wasn't always just 'consultants,' Luna," Arthur said, his expression grave. "Her uncle is a high-ranking diplomat in Eastern Europe with deep ties to the shipping syndicates Nathan was laundering money for. If Obsidian manages to claim that the funds in Ashford Global belong to a foreign government, the federal charges could be dismissed on jurisdictional grounds."
I sat up, ignoring the sharp protest of my healing skin. "We can't let him walk, Dad. If he gets out, he’ll disappear. He’ll take Celeste and the millions they stole, and they’ll spend the rest of their lives laughing at us."
"They won't get out," a new voice spoke from the doorway.
I looked up to see a tall, lean man in a dark navy suit standing in the entrance. He had sharp, intelligent green eyes and a calm, quiet confidence that immediately demanded respect.
"Luna, this is Liam Mercer," Arthur introduced. "He is the chief financial investigator for the International Monetary Fund, and the man I’ve hired to run the forensic audit on Obsidian."
Liam stepped into the room, offering me a polite, respectful nod. "Mrs. Ashford—or should I say, Ms. Vance. I've spent the last six hours reviewing the records you compiled. I have to say, your work is impeccable. You found accounts that even the IRS didn't know existed."
"I had to," I said, my voice steadying. "I had to survive."
"Well, those accounts are going to be Nathan’s undoing," Liam said, pulling up a file on his tablet. "Obsidian isn't a foreign government, Luna. It’s a front. And I’ve just found the one transaction that connects Nathan directly to the syndicate's illegal weapon shipments in the Port of Seattle. If we can prove he knew about the cargo, diplomatic immunity won't save him from charges of international terrorism."
Liam looked at me, his green eyes burning with a fierce, professional determination. "But to do that, we need the master decryption key for Nathan's personal laptop. And according to our sources, that laptop is still hidden somewhere inside Blackthorn Manor."

"He keeps it in the wine cellar," I said immediately. "Behind the vintage Bordeaux rack. There is a biometric safe."
"Then we have to go back," Liam said. "Tonight. Before his legal team gets a court order to seal the property."
