Chapter 2 - The Sound of Thunder

The rhythmic, heavy thud of helicopter blades slicing through the midnight air grew louder, vibrating through the cold, polished black stone of the grand hall.

Nathan’s hand tightened around the handle of the braided riding whip, his knuckles turning white. His eyes darted from me, still kneeling in a pool of my own blood, toward the high, arched windows of Blackthorn Manor.

"What did you do?" he demanded, his voice losing its confident, smooth edge, replaced by a sharp, defensive snap. "Who did you just call?"

I didn't answer. The pain radiating across my back was an agonizing, blinding sheet of fire, but the absolute terror in his eyes was the sweetest anesthetic I had ever tasted. I let out a low, ragged laugh, my lips stained red.

Celeste stood up from the white leather armchair, her glass of champagne trembling so violently that the golden liquid spilled over her manicured fingers. "Nathan... look outside. The sky... they’re landing on the lawn!"

Through the massive glass panes, searchlights suddenly cut through the darkness, sweeping across the grand hall like artificial lightning. The blinding beams illuminated the dust motes dancing in the air, washing over Celeste's horrified face and Nathan’s frozen silhouette.

Then came the sound of breaking glass.

Not from the front door, but from the high balcony. Heavy-duty rope lines crashed through the windows as ten men in matte-black tactical gear, carrying fully automatic weapons, rappelled into the hall with absolute military precision.

Nathan instinctively stepped back, pulling the riding whip up as if it could protect him against military-grade firearms. "What the hell is this?! This is private property! I am Nathan Ashford, CEO of—"

"Quiet," a deep, chilling voice commanded.

From the shattered remains of the grand entrance stepped a man.

He didn't wear tactical gear. He wore a perfectly tailored, charcoal-grey three-piece suit that cost more than Nathan’s entire car collection. He was sixty-two years old, his silver hair cropped close, his face etched with a cold, terrifying authority that made the armed soldiers around him look like mere children.

My father. Arthur Vance.

To Nathan, my father was 'Artie,' a retired, boring accountant who lived in a quiet seaside cottage in Maine. But tonight, the man standing in the foyer was the architect of global financial security, a legend whose private intelligence firm protected the assets of sovereign nations and hunted down white-collar cartels for fun.

"Dad," I whispered, the word escaping my throat as my strength finally failed me. I began to slide toward the stone floor.

Before I could fall, Arthur was beside me. He dropped to his knees, completely ignoring the blood soaking into his expensive suit, and wrapped his strong, trembling arms around me.

"I've got you, my beautiful girl," my father whispered, his voice thick with a raw, devastating pain. He looked over my shoulder at the horrific, shredded state of my back, and his eyes turned to absolute, freezing ice. "I am so sorry I made you wait. I am so sorry."

He gently lifted me, carrying me to the white leather armchair Celeste had just vacated. One of his private medical officers immediately rushed forward, administering a rapid-acting painkiller and beginning to treat my wounds.

Arthur slowly stood up, turning to face Nathan and Celeste.

Nathan tried to find his voice, his chest puffing out in a desperate attempt to reclaim his lost power. "Arthur? What is the meaning of this? You... you’re just an accountant! You can't burst into my home with armed men! This is kidnapping! This is—"

"An accountant?" Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. He walked toward Nathan, his steps slow and deliberate. "Yes. I spent forty years accounting for the sins of men like you, Nathan. I calculated their greed, their arrogance, and their eventual downfalls. And do you know what I learned?"

Nathan swallowed hard, taking a step back until his hips hit the heavy mahogany credenza.

"I learned that men who abuse their power are always the most pathetic cowards when they lose it," Arthur said.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black tablet, tossing it onto the credenza beside Nathan. The screen was alive with scrolling lines of green data, bank routing numbers, and red warning lights.

"As of thirty seconds ago," Arthur said, "Ashford Global Logistics has been placed into federal receivership. Your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, Zurich, and Panama—the ones Celeste secretly set up for you—have been completely frozen. The Department of Justice has just issued warrants for your arrest on seventy-four counts of money laundering, corporate fraud, and racketeering."

Celeste let out a choked shriek, dropping her champagne flute. It shattered against the stone floor, the sound echoing like a gunshot. "That's... that's impossible! Those accounts are fully encrypted! The shell companies—"

"The shell companies were monitored by my firm since the day you registered them, Ms. Monroe," Arthur said, not even looking at her. "My daughter didn't just stay in this house because she loved the decor. She stayed to feed me the encryption keys. Every time you thought you were outsmarting the system, you were actually handing us the rope to hang you with."

Nathan looked at the tablet, his face turning a pasty, sickly white as he saw the name of his primary shell company, Aura Logistics, flashing in red with the status: SEIZED.

"No," Nathan stammered, the riding whip slipping from his hand and clattering to the floor. "No, Luna... you wouldn't. We built this together! I loved you!"

"You didn't love her, Nathan," Arthur said, stepping directly into his space, his face inches from Nathan’s nose. "You loved her silence. You loved the fact that she had no family to defend her. But tonight, you are going to learn exactly who Arthur Vance is. And I promise you, by the time I am finished, you will beg for the safety of a federal prison."
