Chapter 5 - The War at the Foundry

The old iron foundry in Queens was a vast, rusting labyrinth of corrugated steel, shattered glass, and abandoned machinery. The rain clattered against the tin roof like a drumbeat of war.
At 11:15 PM, three black SUVs rolled quietly into the overgrown courtyard, their headlights cut off.
Marcus and eight heavily armed men stepped out into the dark, moving in a tight tactical formation to secure the perimeter. Once the clear signal was given, Julian stepped out of his armored sedan, holding a leather briefcase.
He walked into the main hall of the foundry, his shoes echoing against the wet concrete floor.
"I'm here, Elena!" Julian called out, his voice reverberating through the cavernous space. "Come out into the light. Let’s finish this like civilized people."
High above on the iron catwalks, a single floodlight clicked on, blinding Julian in a stark, white glare.
Elena stepped up to the railing thirty feet above him. She wore a black tactical jacket, her hair tied back, her eyes fixed on the man who had tried to destroy her life.
"You brought eight men, Julian," Elena said down to him. "You never could keep a promise."
Julian laughed softly, tossing the briefcase onto an iron drum. "Did you really think I’d come alone to meet a fugitive? Give me the cryptographic drive, Elena. You’ve played your little game. It’s over."
"It is over, Julian," Elena agreed quietly. "But not for me."
From the dark shadows surrounding the foundry’s upper level, a voice boomed over a bullhorn:
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY!"
Suddenly, powerful high-beam searchlights burst through every window and skylight in the foundry! The iron doors were blown off their hinges by explosive breaching charges, and dozens of heavily armed FBI HRT operatives swarmed into the building!
"It’s a setup!" Marcus yelled, firing his weapon toward the catwalks!
Gunfire erupted inside the foundry. Flashbang grenades exploded with blinding bursts of white light and deafening booms. Julian’s mercenaries were caught completely off guard, forced to their knees as federal agents flooded the floor.
Julian grabbed his briefcase and sprinted toward a side exit, his face twisted in panic. He pushed open a rusted iron door, bursting into an alleyway—only to find Special Agent Thomas Reed standing there with his service weapon drawn, flanked by four federal officers.
"Julian Blackwood," Agent Reed said coldly. "Put the bag down."
Julian froze. His breathing was ragged, his tailored suit soaked in rain and soot. "Agent Reed... you don't understand. My wife is insane. She set this entire thing up—"
"Save it for the judge, Julian," Reed interrupted. "We’ve been monitoring your company’s server traffic for the past two hours. While you were driving here, your lawyer, Victoria Sterling, was arrested at JFK airport trying to board a private jet with four billion dollars in illegal assets. She’s already signing a full confession naming you as the head of the operation."
Julian felt the world spin beneath his feet. The political shields, the billions of dollars, the invincible empire he had built—all of it had crumbled in less than two hours.
He looked up at the emergency fire escape stairs above the alley.
Elena was standing there, accompanied by David Vance. Rain fell over her face, but she stood tall, whole, and completely free.
Julian’s eyes burned with bitter, useless fury as the federal agents tackled him to the wet asphalt, forcing his wrists into steel handcuffs.
"Elena!" Julian screamed, his voice breaking as he was slammed against the hood of a police cruiser. "You were nothing without me! NOTHING!"
May you like
Elena looked down at him without a trace of fear or anger left in her heart. Only pity.
"No, Julian," she whispered into the rain. "I was everything. I just let you make me forget it."
