Chapter 2 - The Fall and the Ashes

The drop was thirty stories to the cold pavement below, but as Julian lunged forward to grab her, Elena didn't step back—she dropped flat onto the concrete balcony floor.

Julian’s fingers brushed against the fabric of her coat, missing her by inches. His momentum carried him toward the edge, his polished oxfords slipping on the rain-slick glass tiles. For a terrifying second, he teetered over the abyss before grabbing the iron railing, his face pale with sudden, uncharacteristic shock.

Elena didn't wait. She scrambled to her feet, kicked off her heels, and sprinted back inside the penthouse.

"Elena!" Julian roared behind her, his velvet voice shattering into jagged rage. "If you cross that door, you destroy everything!"

She grabbed her phone and the small, leather-bound notebook she had spent six months hiding inside the library’s hollowed-out legal volumes. It contained account numbers, wire transfers, and offshore entities registered in the Cayman Islands—proof that Julian wasn't just a successful hedge fund tycoon, but the head of a massive financial laundering ring operating under the guise of the Blackwood Group.

She hit the private elevator button. The brass doors opened immediately. She leaped inside and slammed the emergency close button just as Julian burst into the marble foyer, his dark eyes ablaze.

The doors closed, severing his terrifying silhouette from her sight.

As the elevator plunged downward, Elena’s chest heaved. Her hands were trembling violently. For five years, she had lived as Julian Blackwood’s trophy wife—a former investigative journalist whom he had courted with endless red roses, private jets, and promises of protection. But the protection had turned into a gilded cage, and the roses had masked the stench of blood.

The elevator opened into the underground parking garage. The air was cold, smelling of oil and exhaust. Elena ran barefoot across the concrete toward her dark gray sedan—a vehicle she had bought using cash under a false name three weeks prior, parked in a visitor spot far from Julian’s fleet of luxury cars.

She unlocked the door, threw herself into the driver’s seat, and turned the ignition.

Just as the engine roared to life, a heavy black SUV turned the corner, its high beams blinding her through the windshield. It was Marcus, Julian’s head of security, blocking the main exit ramp.

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. Not tonight. I’m not dying tonight.

Instead of backing away, she slammed her foot onto the accelerator. Her sedan surged forward, tires squealing against the polished floor. Marcus, realizing she wasn't going to stop, swerved at the last second. Her sedan clipped the rear bumper of the SUV with a violent crunch of metal, but she broke through, speeding up the exit ramp and bursting into the torrential rain of Manhattan.

In her rearview mirror, the city lights blurred into red and white streaks. She glanced at the passenger seat where the notebook lay.

She wasn't just running from her husband; she was carrying the key to bringing down a billion-dollar criminal syndicate. But as she merged onto the dark highway heading north toward Upstate New York, her phone buzzed on the dashboard.

An unknown number.

She hit speakerphone. "Hello?"

"Did you really think the penthouse was the only place equipped with cameras, Elena?"

It wasn't Julian’s voice. It was a woman’s voice—cool, sharp, and dripping with malicious delight.

Victoria Sterling. Julian’s chief legal counsel and the woman whose name was signed on the offshore accounts. The "her" Elena had discovered.

"Turn on the news, my dear," Victoria purred. "You’ve had a busy night."

Elena turned on the radio. The news anchor’s voice cut through the static:

...Breaking news tonight out of Manhattan. Authorities have issued an urgent arrest warrant for Elena Blackwood in connection with the tragic death of senior financial analyst Sarah Lin, who was found dead in her apartment earlier this evening. Police report that Mrs. Blackwood’s vehicle was spotted leaving the scene...

May you like

Elena gasped, her breath catching in her throat. Sarah Lin was her informant—the young accountant who had handed her the notebook two days ago.

"Julian frames his enemies, Elena," Victoria whispered through the speaker. "Now you aren't just a runaway wife. You’re a fugitive wanted for murder."
