Chapter 5 - The Gift of Life

Three weeks after the courtroom victory.
The summer sun was setting over the quiet mountain lake near our secure estate, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, rose, and violet.
The peace in our home was total. The legal battle was effectively over—faced with overwhelming federal evidence and facing forty years in prison, Victoria Sterling accepted a full guilty plea bargain, agreeing to serve twenty-eight years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Her assets were seized, and the family trust was permanently placed into a protected fund for our child.
It was 2:00 AM on a warm Sunday morning when the quiet in our bedroom was broken.
A sharp, sudden contraction tightened across my abdomen. I let out a low gasp, sitting up in bed, clutching the sheets.
Beside me, Alejandro was awake in a microsecond—the sharp instincts of an Army Captain kicking in instantly.
"Elena?" Alejandro asked, sitting up, his hands hovering gently over my back. "Is it time?"
"Alejandro..." I gasped, smiling through a sudden wave of emotion as my water broke against the mattress. "Our son... he wants to meet his dad."
The next six hours were a whirlwind of intense, miraculous life.
At the private maternity center in town, surrounded by world-class doctors and gentle nurses, Alejandro never left my side for a single second. He held my hand, wiped the sweat from my forehead, whispered words of endless love and encouragement into my ear, and held me upright through every wave of labor.
At 8:14 AM, as the morning sun broke through the hospital windows, a loud, clear, beautiful cry filled the room.
"It’s a boy!" the doctor announced joyfully, gently wrapping the newborn in a warm white blanket. "A healthy, eight-pound baby boy!"
The doctor placed the tiny bundle onto my chest.
I burst into tears of pure, unadulterated happiness. The baby had a tuft of soft dark hair, tiny pink fingers that instantly clutched at my gown, and his father’s bright, striking hazel eyes.
Alejandro leaned down, his face wet with tears of raw joy, pressing his forehead gently against mine as we both looked down at the tiny miracle lying between us.
"Look at him, Elena," Alejandro whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. "He's perfect. He's safe."
"What should we name him?" I asked, running my finger gently over our son’s soft cheek.

Alejandro looked at me with endless devotion. "Leo. Leo Michael Sterling. Named after your father... because he represents strength, truth, and light."
"Leo Michael," I repeated softly, kissing our baby's forehead. "Welcome to the world, my sweet boy."
