Chapter 4 - The Courtroom of Shadows

The Grand Superior Courthouse was packed with news cameras, high-society reporters, and curious onlookers.

The story of the decorated Army Captain returning from deployment to save his pregnant wife from a murderous socialite mother-in-law had exploded across national news channels. Social media was burning with outrage under the hashtag #JusticeForElena.

Inside the courtroom, Victoria Sterling sat at the defense table dressed in an expensive black suit, trying desperately to look frail, elderly, and wronged. Her lawyer, Harrison Blake, stood arrogantly beside her, adjusting his golden cufflinks.

On the other side of the room, I sat between Alejandro and Marcus. I wore a simple, elegant navy dress that framed my baby bump. Alejandro sat close, his hand resting over mine, providing an unbreakable pillar of strength.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Katherine Thorne," the bailiff called out.

Judge Thorne, a formidable woman with sharp gray eyes and twenty-five years of judicial experience, took her seat on the bench.

"We are here today for the emergency preliminary hearing in the matter of the State versus Victoria Sterling," Judge Thorne announced, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "Counselor Blake, you filed a motion requesting a psychological evaluation for the victim, Mrs. Elena Sterling. Present your argument."

Harrison Blake stood up, bowing slightly to the judge.

"Your Honor," Blake began smoothly, walking toward the center aisle. "My client, Victoria Sterling, is a respected matriarch and philanthropist. The night in question was a tragic family misunderstanding. My client discovered that her daughter-in-law, Elena, was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis prior to birth, exhibiting paranoid delusions and threatening self-harm. My client was merely trying to protect her future grandchild—"

"Objection, Your Honor!" Marcus Vance interjected, standing up calmly. "Counsel is presenting fabricated medical documents as facts. Those documents were illegally produced by the defendant herself."

"Overruled for now," Judge Thorne stated. "Mr. Blake, do you have any credible medical witness to support your claim of the victim's instability?"

"We do, Your Honor," Blake smiled arrogantly. "We call Dr. Julian Vance to the stand."

A thin man in a tailored suit walked up to the witness box, swore his oath, and sat down.

"Dr. Vance," Blake said, "you reviewed the psychological notes regarding Elena Sterling, correct?"

"I did," Dr. Vance lied smoothly, looking directly at the judge. "Based on the documented behavioral patterns, it is my professional opinion that Mrs. Elena Sterling suffers from severe delusional psychosis, rendering her incapable of making rational decisions for her child."

A soft chatter swept through the gallery. Victoria smirked from the defense table, giving me a subtle, venomous glare.

"Cross-examination, Your Honor," Marcus said, stepping forward with a calm, predatory smile.

Marcus walked up to Dr. Vance, holding a single sheet of paper.

"Dr. Vance," Marcus asked pleasantly. "How much were you paid by Victoria Sterling’s defense team to write that four-page opinion without ever meeting or examining Mrs. Elena Sterling in person?"

Dr. Vance shifted uncomfortably in his chair. "I was paid a standard expert consultation fee of five thousand dollars..."

"Is that so?" Marcus pulled a second document from his folder. "Because according to federal bank records subpoenaed two hours ago by the District Attorney, you received a wire transfer of seventy-five thousand dollars from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered to Victoria Sterling three days before you filed this report."

The courtroom erupted into loud gasps.

Dr. Vance’s face drained of color. "I... that was for independent research!"

"Furthermore, Your Honor," Marcus turned to the judge, raising his voice so it rang across the room, "Dr. Julian Vance had his medical license revoked in the state of California four years ago for writing fraudulent prescriptions and taking bribes from pharmaceutical firms!"

Judge Thorne slammed her gavel down hard. BANG!

"Order in the court!" Judge Thorne bellowed, her eyes flashing with anger as she glared at the witness. "Dr. Vance, you are ordered to step down immediately. This court will be referring your testimony to the state prosecutor for immediate perjury charges!"

Harrison Blake looked like he had been struck by lightning. He turned to look at Victoria, whose hands were now trembling violently against the table.

"Your Honor," Marcus continued, stepping toward the center of the court. "We do not merely request the dismissal of the defense's motion. We request the immediate admission of the federal racketeering indictments handed down this morning by the United States District Court."

Marcus handed a thick red folder to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge.

As Judge Thorne read through the pages, her face turned into an icy mask of absolute condemnation. She looked down at Victoria Sterling over her reading glasses.

"Victoria Sterling," Judge Thorne said, her voice dropping into a terrifying register. "The evidence presented here reveals a systematic campaign of grand theft, extortion, forgery, and attempted violent assault against a heavily pregnant woman. Your motion for a competency hearing is denied with prejudice."

Judge Thorne slammed her gavel down once more.

"The defendant will remain held without bail pending her criminal trial. Court is adjourned!"

Victoria let out a sharp, hysterical shriek as federal marshals stepped up behind her table, pulling her hands behind her back to snap heavy iron chains around her waist.

"Alejandro!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking as she was dragged toward the side holding cell. "I am your mother! You can't let them do this to me! I built your life!"

May you like

Alejandro stood up tall, his arm wrapped securely around my shoulders, looking at his mother with cold, unwavering finality.

"You didn't build my life, Victoria," Alejandro said, his voice echoing clearly across the clearing room. "You tried to destroy it. And now, you will pay for every tear my wife shed."
