Chapter 4 - The Shadow of War

The atmosphere inside the Corsetti mansion transformed overnight into a armed fortress on red alert.

Heavy steel shutters were lowered over the ground-floor windows. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter every ten minutes, and the quiet halls echoed with the clicks of assault rifles being loaded.

For three weeks, Serena lived in the east wing of the estate, tending to little Lucas. Under her care, the baby thrived—gaining weight, sleeping through the night, and cooing whenever Serena walked into the room.

During those three weeks, Serena watched Vincent closely.

She saw the ruthless mob boss who commanded fifty men with a single movement of his hand. But she also saw the man who would secretly walk into the nursery at 3:00 AM, sit in the rocking chair beside Lucas’s crib, and quietly watch his son sleep for hours, his face etched with silent exhaustion.

One late evening, after feeding Lucas, Serena walked down to the estate’s ground-floor library to find a book.

The library was a massive room lined with thousands of rare leather-bound volumes. As she walked down the rows of bookshelves, she heard low, tense voices coming from the adjacent study.

"I'm telling you, Vincent, we strike now!" Marco Rossi’s aggressive voice echoed through the crack in the door. "We wipe out the Moretti leadership before they organize a full blockade!"

"No," Vincent’s deep voice responded calmly. "If we launch an open war in the city streets, the federal prosecutors will step in. I won't risk drawing federal attention to the estate while Lucas is this young."

"It's not just the Morettis, Boss," Marco argued, his tone darkening. "There are rumors that someone inside our organization is feeding them intelligence. Someone leaked the location of Maria’s hospital wing three weeks ago. Someone told them the baby was born alive!"

Serena’s breath caught in her throat. A mole inside the Corsetti family.

"Find the traitor," Vincent commanded coldly. "And when you do, bring them to the basement. I will handle them personally."

Serena stepped back quietly, trying to retreat into the shadows of the library. But as her foot moved, her heel caught on the edge of a heavy Persian rug, knocking a heavy bronze bookend off a side table.

CLANG!

The sharp metallic sound shattered the silence of the room.

"Who's there?!" Marco roared instantly.

The study door flew open. Marco stepped out, his gun drawn and pointed directly at Serena’s chest.

Serena backed away, raising her hands, her heart hammering frantically against her ribs.

"Lower the gun, Marco!" Vincent ordered, rushing out behind him.

"She was eavesdropping, Boss!" Marco snapped, his finger tightening on the trigger. "She's been sneaking around the estate for three weeks! How do we know she wasn't planted here by the Morettis?!"

"I was looking for a book for the nursery!" Serena said, her voice shaking as she stared down the barrel of the weapon. "I didn't hear anything!"

Vincent stepped directly between Marco’s gun and Serena, shielding her with his broad body.

"I said lower the weapon," Vincent growled at his underboss, his voice laced with lethal fury. "If you ever point a gun at her again, Marco, it will be the last thing you do with that hand."

Marco glared at Vincent, his jaw tightening in suppressed rage, before slowly lowering the pistol. "You're soft, Vincent. The girl is getting under your skin."

Marco turned on his heel and stormed out of the library, slamming the heavy doors behind him.

Vincent turned around to face Serena. He reached out, his big hands taking her trembling shoulders. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," Serena gasped, her vision blurring slightly as a sharp spike of pain shot through her heart. She swayed on her feet, her legs giving out beneath her.

"Serena!" Vincent caught her before she hit the floor, lifting her easily into his arms.

He carried her over to a plush velvet sofa, laying her down gently. He knelt beside her, his face pale with panic as he watched her fight for air.

"Get the estate doctor! Now!" Vincent bellowed toward the hallway.

"No... no doctor," Serena gasped, reaching up to grab Vincent’s lapel. Her pale fingers clutched his dark jacket. "It's... it's my heart. I just need my medication... in my bag..."

Vincent sprinted across the room, grabbed her canvas bag, found the small prescription bottle, and brought it back to her with a glass of water. He helped her sit up, carefully holding the glass to her lips as she swallowed the pill.

For ten terrifying minutes, Vincent stayed on his knees beside her, holding her cold hand tightly in his, watching her breath slowly stabilize.

"You're sick," Vincent whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in years. "Why didn't you tell me?"

Serena leaned her head back against the cushions, exhausted, looking at the feared mafia boss kneeling at her feet like a protective guardian.

May you like

"Because I'm used to fighting my own battles, Vincent," she murmured quietly.

Vincent squeezed her hand tighter, his grey eyes burning with an intense, fierce determination. "Not anymore, Serena. As long as you are under my roof, you will never fight alone again."
