Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

The annual emergency shareholders' meeting of Ward International was held in the grand auditorium on the fifth floor of the corporate tower.

Over two hundred major investors, board members, and financial journalists filled the leather seats under the bright stage lights. The atmosphere was charged with extreme tension.

I sat at the center of the main stage desk, flanked by Arthur Pendelton and our financial advisory team.

At 10:00 AM, the double doors at the back of the auditorium burst open.

Daniel Vance walked in, accompanied by a high-priced, aggressive criminal defense attorney named Victor Steele, whom Richard Dupont had secretly funded. Behind them walked Patricia, wearing a rented black dress, trying desperately to project an aura of tragic nobility.

A murmur swept through the crowd as cameras pivoted toward them.

Victor Steele marched down the center aisle, holding a thick leather briefcase, his voice booming across the auditorium sound system.

"Members of the board! Esteemed shareholders!" Steele announced with dramatic flair. "I am Victor Steele, representing Mr. Daniel Vance. We are here today to contest the unlawful termination of my client and to expose a massive conspiracy orchestrated by Ms. Elena Ward!"

The journalists began furiously typing on their laptops.

Arthur Pendelton stood up calmly from his seat, adjusting his microphone. "Mr. Steele, this is an internal shareholder meeting. Your client has been terminated and has no standing here."

"My client has standing as a victim of corporate extortion!" Steele shouted back, stepping up to the microphone stand in the center aisle. "We have sworn affidavits proving that Ms. Elena Ward secretly funneled corporate funds into offshore accounts during her marriage, intentionally framing my client to force a favorable divorce settlement!"

Daniel stepped up beside his attorney, trying to look composed, putting on the performance of a lifetime.

"It's true," Daniel said, his voice echoing across the room, full of rehearsed emotion. "I trusted my wife. I thought she was supporting my vision. But she manipulated the accounting books from behind the scenes. She set up the Cayman shell companies using my forged signature so she could seize total control of the company once I requested a divorce!"

Patricia gasped loudly from the front row, pulling out a handkerchief. "She ruined my son! She used us!"

A tense quiet fell over the auditorium. Several independent board members looked at one another with raised eyebrows, clearly unnerved by the public accusation.

I sat silently at the center desk. I didn't interrupt. I didn't shout. I simply watched Daniel finish his grand speech, his face flushed with triumph as if he believed he had finally turned the tables.

When the room went quiet, I reached out and tapped my desk microphone.

Tap. Tap.

"Are you finished, Daniel?" I asked, my voice smooth, quiet, and entirely unbothered.

Daniel smirked arrogant. "The truth is out, Elena. You can't hide behind your grandfather's name anymore."

"The truth is indeed out, Daniel," I replied softly.

I looked over at Arthur, nodding once. "Activate the main projector."

The giant high-definition screens behind the stage flickered to life.

Instead of financial spreadsheets, a clear, high-definition audio and video recording began playing.

The screen displayed the interior of the airport motel room from twenty-four hours ago. The video showed Richard Dupont grabbing Daniel by the collar, shoving him against the wall, and explicitly threatening him to lie at today's meeting in exchange for hiding his tax evasion.

Daniel’s voice rang loud and clear through the auditorium speakers:

"Okay! I'll do it! I'll lie to the board! I'll claim Elena coerced me into signing the Cayman shell transfers!"

The entire auditorium erupted into a thunderous chorus of gasps and shocked yells.

Daniel’s face drained of every drop of color. He staggered back two steps, his eyes wide with absolute horror as he stared at the giant screen displaying his confession.

"How... how did you get that?!" Daniel stammered, his body shaking violently.

"Mr. Dupont’s two associates," Arthur Pendelton explained with a pleasant smile, "were paid undercover private investigators hired by Ward International legal security three days ago. Every word spoken in that motel room was broadcast live to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Before Daniel could comprehend the magnitude of his trap, the rear doors of the auditorium swung open once again.

Six federal agents in navy jackets with gold 'FBI' lettering walked down the aisle, followed by city police officers.

"Daniel Vance," the lead federal agent announced, pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate extortion, conspiracy, and perjury."

"No! No! Wait!" Daniel shrieked, looking frantically around the room for help. He grabbed his attorney's arm. "Steele! Do something!"

Victor Steele immediately stepped away from Daniel, closing his briefcase with a sharp snap. "I am withdrawing as your counsel effective immediately, Mr. Vance."

As the federal agents pulled Daniel's arms behind his back and snapped the cuffs around his wrists, Patricia rushed forward, screaming hysterically.

"Let go of my son! You can't arrest him! He is a Vance!" Patricia shrieked, shoving one of the officers.

The secondary police officer turned around calmly. "Patricia Vance, you are under arrest for criminal obstruction of justice and corporate fraud regarding unauthorized usage of impounded credit assets."

CLICK.

A second pair of handcuffs snapped around Patricia’s wrists.

Mother and son were paraded down the center aisle of the auditorium in front of fifty flashing press cameras, weeping, shouting, and accusing each other of ruin as they were led away to the waiting police cruisers outside.

I stood at the stage desk, looking down at the empty center aisle, feeling the absolute, clean weight of final justice.
