Chapter 1 - The Eviction of the Pretenders

The heavy oak front doors of the penthouse lingered open, letting the crisp night air sweep through the marble grand foyer.

Daniel stood completely frozen, his face as pale as fresh snow, staring at the torn pieces of the separation agreement fluttering across the polished floor. Beside him, Patricia had collapsed back onto the velvet sofa, her hands trembling so violently that her gold bracelets clattered against her wrists. Chloe stood several feet away, her arms folded tightly across her chest, her arrogant demeanor evaporating into pure, frantic panic.

Behind me, Arthur Pendelton—my grandfather’s long-time personal counsel and the Chief Legal Officer of Ward International—stepped forward. He was flanked by four tall, stern security guards in sharp black suits, along with a team of three forensic accountants holding thick leather briefcases.

"Ms. Ward," Arthur said calmly, adjusting his gold wire-rimmed glasses and bowing slightly. "The emergency board resolution has been formally ratified. The board voted twelve to zero in favor of immediate termination. Mr. Daniel Vance’s executive privileges, security clearances, and corporate authority have been revoked as of precisely 8:14 PM."

"Wait! You can't do this!" Daniel yelled, stumbling forward, his hands outstretched as if he could physically stop the inevitable. "Arthur, you've known me for four years! I am the face of Vance-Ward Logistics! I built the international shipping corridors! You can't just throw me out like a dog!"

Arthur didn't even blink. He looked at Daniel with cold, professional detachment.

"Correction, Mr. Vance," Arthur replied, his voice echoing cleanly off the high ceilings. "You were an appointed Chief Executive Officer whose tenure was entirely contingent upon the endorsement of the Ward Family Trust. You built nothing. You merely signed the contracts that Ms. Elena negotiated on your behalf while you were busy attending red-carpet galas and playing host."

"Elena... please!" Daniel begged, turning his wild, bloodshot eyes toward me. He dropped to one knee on the cold marble, reaching for the hem of my coat. "Elena, look at me! We were married for four years! We shared a life! I made a mistake... Chloe meant nothing to me! It was just stress! Please, let's talk about this in private!"

"Daniel!" Chloe shrieked, her voice shrill with indignation. "What are you saying?! You told me you hated her! You told me she was a parasite holding your career back!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" Daniel snapped back, glaring at her with venomous hatred. "If you hadn't pushed me to force her out tonight, none of this would be happening!"

Patricia scrambled up from the sofa, her pearls swishing against her neck as she rushed over to my side. Her voice, once dripping with contempt, was now a pathetic, quavering squeak.

"Elena... my dear, sweet Elena," Patricia whimpered, reaching out to touch my arm. "You know I always thought of you as a daughter! I was just trying to keep the peace! Daniel was foolish, yes, but mothers always worry! Surely you wouldn't kick your own family out onto the street over a little marital disagreement?"

I slowly pulled my arm away, looking at Patricia with absolute, calm indifference.

"You reminded me thirty minutes ago, Patricia," I said softly, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper, "that I was 'beneath your class.' You told me I brought nothing to this family. You said I should be grateful for the breadcrumbs you allowed me to eat."

"I was mistaken! I was foolish!" Patricia sobbed, wringing her hands.

"No, Patricia," I replied, stepping back. "You were honest. And now, I am being honest with you."

Arthur stepped between us, gesturing to the security guards. "Officers, enforce the trespass injunction."

The lead security officer stepped forward, pulling a stack of formal eviction notices from his coat. "Daniel Vance, Patricia Vance, and Chloe Dupont. Under section 4 of the property deed registered to the Ward Family Trust, you are ordered to vacate these premises immediately. You have ten minutes to collect your personal clothing. All jewelry, vehicles, credit cards, and luxury items purchased using Ward International corporate accounts are impounded pending forensic audit."

"What?!" Chloe screamed, her eyes wide with horror. "My bags! My designer dresses! My engagement ring!"

"The five-carat diamond ring on your finger, Miss Dupont," Arthur noted dryly, "was purchased three weeks ago using a Ward International corporate Black Card under the line item 'Operational Supplies.' It is corporate property. Take it off."

Chloe looked at Daniel, then at the stern security guards closing in on her. Tears of humiliation spilled down her cheeks as she unclasped the heavy ring and threw it violently onto the floor.

"I hate you!" Chloe shrieked at Daniel, slapping him across the face before grabbing her purse and running out toward the elevator lobby.

Daniel sat on the floor, holding his cheek, staring blankly as security officers escorted his weeping mother toward the guest bedrooms to pack two small bags.

"Ten minutes, Daniel," I said calmly, looking down at the man I had once loved. "Make sure you leave the house keys on the counter. The locks are already being changed."

May you like

Without waiting for his response, I turned my back on the grand foyer, surrounded by my legal team, and walked out to the waiting convoy of black SUVs.

The night was cold, but for the first time in four years, I could finally breathe.
