While the paramedics—who had been waiting at the curb—rushed in with a pediatric gurney to take Leo and Sophia, Arthur Vance handed Eleanor a thick stack of legal documents.
"This is an emergency eviction order, enforceable immediately," Arthur stated. "Furthermore, the military family trust has frozen all secondary debit cards, stipends, and allowances previously granted to you and your daughter during Captain Lucas’s deployment. You have exactly ten minutes to gather your personal clothing. Anything else left in this house remains the property of the trust."
"Ten minutes?!" Audrey screamed, her face turning an ugly shade of purple. "I have designer bags in the closet! I have jewelry!"
"Bags bought with my deployment hazard pay," I said, looking her dead in the eye. "Jewelry stolen from my wife’s vanity while she was too weak from your beatings to fight back. Leave it."
Sophia was gently lifted onto the gurney, her blue eyes locked onto mine. She was still weeping, but the terror was gone, replaced by the profound shock of absolute rescue. "Lucas... don't leave us," she whispered, her voice raw.
"I’m right behind you, Sophia. The MPs are staying here to ensure the trash is thrown out. Go with the doctors. You’re safe now."
Eleanor watched as the paramedics wheeled my family out. She tried to maintain her regal posture, but her hands were shaking violently. "You will regret this, Lucas. I am your mother. I built your reputation. If you do this, I will drag your name through the mud. The military will court-martial you for treating your family like dogs!"

The local police officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt. "Actually, Ms. Bennett, you won't be dragging anyone anywhere. Eleanor Bennett and Audrey Bennett, you are under arrest for domestic battery, unlawful restraint, and felony child endangerment. Hands behind your back."
The sound of the cuffs clicking shut was the sweetest music I had heard in eight long months.
