Chapter 2: The Ambush at the Door

Chapter 2: The Ambush at the Door

Eleanor’s hand froze mid-air, her fingers gripping the lapel of Sophia’s silk robe. Audrey’s wine glass tilted, a dark red drop of Merlot staining the expensive cream carpet she had arrogantly assumed she owned.

Two burly MPs (Military Police) in pristine camouflage uniforms stepped into the foyer first, their faces expressionless stone. Behind them came two local police officers, a stern-faced woman carrying a badge from Child Protective Services (CPS), and a man in a flawless charcoal suit—Arthur Vance, the lead attorney for my military family trust.

"Lucas?" Eleanor’s voice lost its aristocratic purr, replaced by a sharp, nervous tremor. "What is the meaning of this? Why are these people in our home?"

"It's not your home, Eleanor," Arthur Vance spoke up, stepping forward and opening his leather briefcase with a crisp, echoing snap. "As of 0600 hours this morning, your temporary occupancy permit for this estate has been legally revoked due to gross violations of the trust agreement, including systemic property damage and unauthorized lifestyle funding."

"You can't do this!" Audrey shrieked, pointing an angry, trembling finger at the CPS agent. "This is a family matter! Lucas, tell them to leave! We were just helping your pathetic wife raise your kid!"

The female police officer looked past Audrey, her eyes locking onto Sophia, who was still shivering on the floor, holding her bruised arms. The officer's jaw tightened. "Sir," she said, looking at me. "Is that your wife?"

"Yes," I said, my voice dangerously calm, the voice of a commander who had already mapped out the entire kill zone. "And this is my son, Leo. His fever is at 104 degrees. My mother and sister have held them hostage, confiscated her communication devices, and physically assaulted her."

"That’s a lie!" Eleanor roared, stepping toward me. "She tripped! She's clumsy, Lucas! She’s been neglecting the baby, and we had to step in—"

"Ma'am, step back and keep your hands where we can see them," the MP barked, his hand resting firmly on his holster. The raw, imposing authority of the military completely paralyzed Eleanor. She had spent her life bullying submissive women, but she had never stood in front of men trained for combat.
