Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The peaceful sanctuary Adrian had built for Emma and her children shattered on a rainy Thursday morning.
Emma was in the mansion's library, helping Noah with his advanced mathematics homework, when the head of security entered the room with a grim expression.
"Miss Dawson," the guard said quietly. "There is a man at the main gate claiming to be your legal husband. He has brought local media reporters with him."
Emma’s face drained of color. The textbook slipped from her hands, cluttering to the floor. "David..."
Adrian entered the library in his wheelchair, his sharp eyes catching her terror instantly. "Who is David?"
"My ex-husband," Emma whispered, her voice trembling violently. "He left us five years ago after taking every cent we had. He was violent, Adrian. I filed for a restraining order, but I couldn't afford the legal fees to finalize the divorce. Technically... we are still legally married."
Outside the wrought-iron gates, rain slicked the driveway as David Dawson stood before a cluster of news cameras, flashing fake tears for the reporters.
"My wife was lured into this mansion!" David shouted into the microphones. "This billionaire took my children and my wife under the pretense of employment! He’s keeping them isolated from their real family!"
Inside the study, Adrian watched the live news feed on his monitors. His jaw was set like iron. Julian’s handiwork was written all over this spectacle. By framing Emma as an unfaithful wife who abandoned her husband for a wealthy benefactor, Julian was attempting to create a public scandal that would force the board of directors to remove Adrian for reputational damage.
"I have to go out there," Emma said, weeping softly. "If I don't, he’ll ruin everything you’ve worked for, Adrian. He’ll make people think you’re a monster."
Adrian rolled his wheelchair closer to her, reaching out to grasp her cold, trembling hands. His grip was firm and grounding.
"You aren't going out there alone," Adrian said coldly. "In fact, you aren't going out there at all. Let them play their games. They think I’m still the broken man who hid from the world."
Adrian turned to Cole. "Call the federal prosecutor. Activate the legal team. And bring Julian Cross to my office by five o'clock."
That afternoon, the heavy oak doors of Adrian’s private office swung open. Julian walked in with an air of smug superiority, holding a leather briefcase.
"Adrian," Julian said smoothy. "I came as soon as I saw the news. This is a PR disaster. The board is panicking. They’re calling for an emergency vote tomorrow to strip you of your executive powers until this domestic situation is resolved."
Adrian sat quietly behind his desk, looking at his younger brother with absolute calm.
"You paid David Dawson one hundred thousand dollars through a shell company in Panama, Julian," Adrian stated plainly.
Julian froze, his confident smile wavering for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about? I don't know any David Dawson."
"You also didn't know that Emma Dawson is Caroline’s blood niece," Adrian continued, sliding a thick stack of certified legal documents across the desk. "Which means Lily and Noah are Caroline’s direct heirs. Under the terms of the original family trust created by my father, fifty-one percent of the voting shares in Cross Enterprises automatically revert to Caroline’s direct line upon their discovery."
Julian’s face turned ghastly pale. "That's... that's impossible! Caroline had no family left!"
"She did," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "And while you were busy bribing reporters and hiring abusive ex-husbands, my legal team finalized the rightful inheritance papers. Emma and her children now hold controlling interest in the company."

Julian stumbled back, clutching his briefcase. "You’re bluffing! A court will never accept this!"
"Try me," Adrian challenged softly. "Now get out of my sight before I have federal agents arrest you for corporate espionage and extortion."
