Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Glass House

News of the sudden shift in the mansion’s hierarchy spread like wildfire among the staff and the elite social circles of Southern California. The "Wolf of La Jolla," a man who had refused human contact for nearly a decade, had suddenly opened his home to a penniless maid and her two children.

While Emma, Lily, and Noah moved into the luxurious guest wing overlooking the ocean, not everyone welcomed their arrival.

In the high-rise district of downtown Los Angeles, Julian Cross—Adrian’s younger half-brother—stared at his phone in disbelief. Julian had spent the last eight years managing the day-to-day operations of Cross Enterprises, fully expecting to inherit the multi-billion-dollar empire upon Adrian’s eventual passing or total retirement.

"A maid?" Julian sneered, pouring himself a drink in his corner office. "He brought a house cleaner and her brat into the estate?"

Sitting across from him was Victoria Sterling, a high-society socialite and long-time board member of Cross Enterprises. She had been pushing for years to unite her family’s fortune with Adrian’s through corporate alliances.

"It’s worse than that, Julian," Victoria said coldly, sliding a folder across his desk. "My contacts inside the house say Adrian has ordered a full medical team to set up a physical therapy unit in the mansion. He’s trying to walk again. And he’s spending hours every day with that little girl."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. "If Adrian recovers, or if he names those charity cases in his estate planning, our control over the board disappears. We need to know who this woman really is."

"I’m already looking into her," Victoria replied with a sinister smile. "Every poor woman has a past. A debt, an ex-husband, a secret. We just need to find the right thread to pull, and her little fairytale will unravel."

Meanwhile, back at the estate, life was changing drastically for nine-year-old Lily.

Every afternoon at 3:00 PM, Adrian would sit on the terrace, and Lily would play her cracked speaker. She taught him silly dances, made up stories about the birds in the garden, and brought a vibrant energy into a house that had been silent for years.

Slowly, agonizingly, the miracle began to unfold. With the guidance of top physical therapists and Lily’s constant encouragement, Adrian managed to lift his right foot two inches off the footrest.

"Look, Lily!" Emma cried out one afternoon, tears streaming down her cheeks as she watched from the doorway.

Adrian was sweating, his jaw tight with immense physical exertion, but his right leg was trembling—alive with effort. He looked up at Lily, his dark eyes shining with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in years.

"You did that," Adrian said, his voice rough with emotion.

Lily beamed, her small hand reaching out to pat his knee. "I told you the garden was just sad, Mr. Adrian. It just needed to move."

For the first time in eight years, Adrian reached out and pulled the little girl into a brief, warm hug. "Thank you, Lily."

However, as the sun set over the Pacific that evening, a dark shadow appeared at the estate’s outer gates. A black sedan parked near the entrance, and a man stepped out, pulling a cigarette from his jacket.

It was David Dawson—Emma’s abusive, gambling-addicted ex-husband, who had been tipped off by Julian’s investigators with a hundred-thousand-dollar payday to make a sudden reappearance.
