Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala

The Buckhead Grand Ballroom was radiant with crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and the elite of Atlanta society. High-profile politicians, foreign investors, and corporate titans milled about in tuxedos and evening gowns, celebrating Richard Vance’s annual foundation fundraiser.
Richard Vance stood near the grand staircase, holding a crystal glass of scotch, holding court with three city council members. He was sixty years old, with silver hair, a manicured tan, and an arrogant smile that proclaimed he owned the world.
"The Midwest Rail contract will be awarded on Monday," Vance boasted smoothly to the council members. "And I assure you, Vance Global is the only firm with the liquidity and stability to carry it out. Poor Mason Sloane seems to have run into some... unexpected personal tragedy tonight."
"Yes, we heard rumors his wife had a medical emergency," one politician remarked sympathetically. "Terrible timing."
"Tragic, truly tragic," Vance sneered insincerely, taking a sip of his scotch. "Sometimes, life just catches up with people who reach too high."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the front of the ballroom swung open.
The chatter in the room died down instantly.
I stepped into the ballroom. I wore a tailored black tuxedo, my hair brushed back, my stature imposing and unflinching. Standing beside me was Detective Carter in a formal dark suit, along with four plainclothes federal agents from the SEC and the FBI.
Vance’s glass froze halfway to his mouth. His eyes widened in absolute, sheer terror as he saw me walking straight down the center aisle of the ballroom toward him.
"Mason?" Vance stammered, forcing a stiff, awkward smile as the crowd parted around us. "What... what a surprise! We heard your wife was... unwell. We were just sending our prayers."
"My wife is alive, Richard," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the silent, luxurious room. "And my three newborn children are resting peacefully at St. Catherine’s."
A murmur of relief ran through the crowd.
Vance swallowed hard, adjusting his bowtie, his arrogant confidence rapidly evaporating. "Well... that is wonderful news! Truly! But why are you here tonight with... law enforcement officers?"
"I came to hand-deliver something to you," I said, reaching inside my breast pocket.
Vance flinched violently, taking a step back as if expecting a weapon.
Instead, I pulled out a black leather binder containing the finalized, sealed proposal for the Midwest Rail Expansion—alongside a thick stack of financial forensic documents.
"This is Sloane Infrastructure’s final bid," I declared loudly so every politician and reporter in the room could hear. "And these documents are the complete wire transfer logs from your offshore subsidiary, Vanguard Holdings, showing four million dollars paid to Vanessa Vale to poison my wife and steal our trade secrets."
The room gasped loudly. Flashbulbs from press cameras began flashing frantically.
"That's a lie!" Vance roared, his face flushing dark red. "This is slander! Security! Escort this madman out of my hall!"

None of the security guards moved. They stood frozen, staring at the federal badges displayed by the agents standing beside me.
"Richard Vance," Detective Carter said, stepping forward and pulling out an official arrest warrant signed by a federal judge thirty minutes ago. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and federal wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
