Chapter 6 - The Longest Night

We clawed our way out of the cellar through the coal chute, emerging into the biting, freezing rain of the late evening. The storm had rolled in, turning the grand lawns of the Sterling estate into a muddy, treacherous swamp.

Sarah supported most of my weight as we dragged ourselves toward the massive iron security gates at the end of the long driveway. The manual override box was located in a small stone pillar near the entrance.

My abdomen was cramping violently. The fall down the stairs, the struggle in the cellar, and the sheer terror of the night had triggered early labor. I could feel the wetness of my water breaking, mixing with the cold rain.

"Sarah... the baby," I sobbed, collapsing against the stone pillar. "She's coming. I can't walk anymore."

"Just a few more seconds, Emily," Sarah pleaded, her fingers working frantically in the dark to open the rusted cover of the override box. She found the heavy iron lever and pulled it down with all her might.

With a deep, metallic groan, the massive iron gates began to swing open, offering a path to the dark, empty highway beyond.

But before we could take a single step forward, the bright, blinding halogen headlights of Julian's luxury SUV cut through the darkness from behind us.

Julian had recovered.

The vehicle roared down the driveway, its tires tearing up the manicured grass as it sped toward us like a mechanical beast.

"Get behind the pillar!" Sarah screamed, shoving me into the narrow gap between the stone structure and the heavy iron gate.

The SUV slammed into the gates just as they opened, the impact throwing Sarah onto the muddy ground. Julian stepped out of the vehicle, his head bandaged with a bloody cloth, his eyes burning with a manic, unstoppable insanity. He held a heavy iron tire iron in his left hand.

"There is nowhere left to run!" Julian screamed over the sound of the howling wind and rain. "This ends tonight!"

He lunged toward Sarah, raising the iron bar.

But as he swung, a pair of bright red and blue emergency lights suddenly illuminated the entire highway behind us.

The shrill, deafening wail of police sirens cut through the storm.

Three police cruisers tore through the open gates, their tires spinning in the mud as they surrounded Julian's SUV. Armed officers jumped out, their weapons drawn, their voices booming through megaphones.

"Drop the weapon! Hands on your head! Do it now!"

Julian froze, the tire iron hovering in the air. He looked at the police, then at me shivering behind the pillar, and finally at Sarah, who was smiling through her tears.

Sarah had used her private recording deck to broadcast the live audio of Julian's confession in the cellar directly to the local police precinct's emergency dispatch before she came down to save me.

The tire iron slipped from Julian's hand, clattering harmlessly into the mud. He slowly raised his hands, his face turning a pale, defeated white as the officers tackled him into the wet earth, slamming handcuffs onto his wrists.

"It's over, Emily," Sarah whispered, crawling over to me and wrapping her arms around my shaking body as the paramedics rushed through the gates with a gurney. "We did it. You're safe."
