Chapter 4 - The Cellar of Secrets

The descent was rough, my body battering against the metal lining of the chute before I crashed onto a pile of damp, discarded linens in the basement.
I lay there for a moment, gasping for air, clutching my stomach. The baby kicked violently, as if sharing my terror. I sat up, looking around the cavernous, stone-walled cellar. This was the oldest foundation of the house, built in the late nineteenth century. It was cold, smelling of earth and old wine.
I pulled myself up, using the stone walls for support. The only light came from high, narrow coal-chute windows near the ceiling, letting in the gray afternoon light.
As I moved deeper into the cellar, searching for a way out to the gardens, my foot struck something hard and metallic under a dusty canvas tarp.
Curiosity, mixed with a desperate search for anything useful, made me pull the tarp away.
I gasped.
Beneath the canvas lay three high-definition security monitors, fully powered and displaying live feeds of every corner of the estate—including the interior of my bedroom, the nursery, and the private study. Next to the monitors was a professional recording deck, its blue lights blinking.
This wasn't Julian's setup. Julian hated technology, always leaving the estate's security to our monthly contract agency.
I walked closer, my eyes wide as I looked at the desk beneath the monitors. Laid out in neat, organized rows were photos of my late father, financial ledgers from my family's shipping company, and a copy of my marriage certificate with Julian's name circled in red ink.
And next to it lay a journal. The handwriting inside was neat, precise, and unmistakably Sarah's.
I opened the journal, my eyes scanning the pages as my breath hitched.
October 14th: I’ve managed to secure the maid position at the Sterling estate. Julian has no idea who I am. He doesn't recognize the face of the family he destroyed in Boston five years ago. My brother took his own life because of Julian's financial scams, and the law did nothing. I will find the evidence. I will expose what he did to the Monroe family, and what he is currently planning to do to Emily.
November 3rd: Julian is getting desperate. His offshore accounts are frozen. He's looking at Emily's trust fund. I found wire cutters and schematics of the foyer chandelier in his private safe. He’s going to kill her. I have to protect her. She is innocent in this.
My hands shook so violently the journal slipped from my grasp, clattering onto the stone floor.
Sarah hadn't just been a quiet, unassuming maid who happened to be in the right place at the right time. She was an undercover investigator, a woman who had entered this house seeking revenge for her family, only to find herself protecting another potential victim.
She had known about the chandelier. She had been watching the security feeds, waiting for the moment Julian made his move.
Suddenly, the heavy iron door at the top of the cellar stairs creaked open.
"Emily..." Julian’s voice drifted down the stone steps, accompanied by the slow, deliberate thud of his leather shoes. "I know you're down there. Sarah was very brave, but she’s... sleeping now. It’s just you and me."
My blood ran cold. She’s sleeping now.

I looked at the stone walls, the dead ends of the cellar, and the heavy iron coal chute above me. I was trapped. There was no way out.
I gripped the claw hammer tightly, stepping back into the deepest shadows of the wine racks, my heart hammering against my ribs as Julian’s shadow lengthened across the stone floor.
