CHAPTER 7: THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

CHAPTER 7: THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
The road stretched endlessly into the darkness.
Olivia Harper drove faster than she ever had before.
The old sedan shook beneath her hands.
Every turn.
Every shadow.
Every pair of headlights behind them.
Made her heart race.
The car behind them was still there.
Not passing.
Not leaving.
Just following.
Like a predator waiting for the right moment.
Noah sat beside her, gripping the seatbelt.
He kept looking through the back window.
"They're still following us."
"I know."
"Who is it?"
Olivia didn't answer.
Because she had no idea.
And for the first time that night...
she realized something.
She was scared.
Not for herself.
For Noah.
A child who had already lost too much.
A child who had just discovered his entire life was a carefully constructed lie.
"We need somewhere safe."
Noah looked at her.
"Where?"
Olivia thought.
Then remembered.
Her father's old cabin.
The place nobody knew about.
The place where she had kept every piece of evidence about his disappearance.
"If we can reach it."
The car behind them suddenly accelerated.
Olivia's eyes widened.
"They're coming closer."
Noah looked terrified.
"Can they hurt us?"
Olivia tightened her grip on the wheel.
"I won't let them."
But even as she said it...
she remembered the message.
Don't trust Olivia.
And the worst part was not that someone sent it.
The worst part was that someone knew exactly what would make Noah doubt her.
Someone knew how fragile his trust was.
Someone knew how to manipulate him.
A few minutes later, Olivia turned onto a smaller road.
The city lights disappeared.
Trees surrounded them.
The old cabin was only fifteen minutes away.
Then suddenly...
the car behind them disappeared.
Olivia slowed down.
"They're gone."
Noah looked back.
"Really?"
She nodded.
But something felt wrong.
Too easy.
"Stay alert."
They continued.
The road became narrower.
The trees became thicker.
Then the engine made a strange sound.
Olivia frowned.
"What?"
The car slowed.
"No."
She hit the gas.
Nothing.
The engine was dying.
"What happened?"
Noah asked.
Olivia tried again.
The car stopped completely.
The headlights flickered.
Then went dark.
Silence.
They were alone.
In the middle of nowhere.
No phone signal.
No lights.
No help.
Olivia looked at Noah.
"Stay inside."
"What are you doing?"
"Checking the car."
She opened the door.
Cold air rushed in.
The forest was silent.
Too silent.
She walked around the vehicle.
The problem became obvious.
The fuel line had been cut.
Someone had sabotaged the car.
She stepped backward.
Someone had planned this.
They weren't just following them.
They were controlling where they went.
A sound came from the trees.
A branch breaking.
Olivia froze.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Another sound.
Closer.
She slowly reached for the small flashlight in her pocket.
Then a voice spoke.
"Olivia."
She turned.
A man stepped out from the darkness.
Not Richard.
Not Daniel.
Not Michael.
Someone she didn't expect.
"Detective Carter."
The detective smiled.
"Good. You're still alive."
Olivia stepped in front of the car.
"Stay away from Noah."
Carter sighed.
"You still don't understand."
"I understand enough."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You understand the story everyone gave you."
He looked at the car.
"But you don't understand the real one."
Olivia's expression hardened.
"You work for Richard."
Carter laughed softly.
"Richard?"
A pause.
"You still think he's the biggest threat?"
That sentence made her hesitate.
"What does that mean?"
Carter stepped closer.
"The Bennetts have been fighting each other for years."
He pointed toward the car.
"And you're right in the middle of it."
Olivia looked back at Noah.
The boy was watching through the window.
Terrified.
"What do you want?"
Carter's expression changed.
"I want the truth."
She almost laughed.
"After everything you've done?"
"You think I kidnapped Emily?"
Olivia froze.
"What?"
Carter shook his head.
"I tried to find her."
"You were investigating."
"I was covering it up."
The answer surprised her.
"Why?"
Carter looked away.
"Because someone powerful ordered me to."
"Richard?"
He didn't answer.
That was an answer.
Olivia stepped forward.
"Then why help us?"
Carter looked at Noah.
His face softened.
"Because I made a mistake."
"What mistake?"
"I trusted the wrong person."
The forest became quiet.
Then Carter said:
"The person who betrayed Emily wasn't Vanessa."
Olivia stared.
"Then who?"
Before Carter could answer...
a gunshot echoed.
The sound exploded through the trees.
Carter fell backward.
Olivia screamed.
"Detective!"
He dropped to the ground.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Noah shouted from the car.
"Olivia!"
She ran toward him.
Another shot.
This time the bullet hit the tree beside her.
Someone was watching.
Someone was hiding.
Carter grabbed Olivia's arm.
His voice was weak.
"Don't let them take Noah."
"Who is shooting?"
Carter looked toward the trees.
His eyes filled with fear.
"The person you least expect."
A figure moved in the darkness.
Olivia pulled Noah out of the car.
They ran.
They didn't know where.
They didn't know who to trust.
They only knew they had to escape.
Behind them, footsteps followed.
Fast.
Getting closer.
Then Olivia saw something ahead.
A small building.
An abandoned ranger station.
She pushed the door open.
They rushed inside.
Locked it.
Both breathing heavily.
Noah looked at her.
"Are we safe?"
Olivia wanted to say yes.
But she couldn't lie.
Not anymore.
"I don't know."
They searched the room.
Old furniture.
Broken radio.
Dust everywhere.
Then Noah noticed something on the wall.
A photograph.
He walked closer.
Olivia followed.
And both froze.
Because the picture showed the ranger station eight years ago.
And standing outside it...
was Emily Bennett.
Alive.
Holding something.
A baby.
Olivia stepped closer.
"No..."
Noah stared.
"That's not possible."
But it was.
Because the baby in Emily's arms...
was Noah.
A note was attached to the photograph.
A note written by Emily.
Olivia picked it up.
Her hands shaking.
The message said:
If you found this, then they know the truth is coming out.
A second line.
The person who saved Noah is still alive.
Then the final sentence.
The sentence that changed everything:
And he is not his father.
Noah stepped back.
"What does that mean?"
Olivia couldn't answer.
Because outside the ranger station...
a car stopped.
A door opened.
Someone stepped out.
And a familiar voice called:
"Noah."
The voice was gentle.
The voice was impossible.
Because it belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
May you like
Emily Bennett.
His mother.
