CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LIE

CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LIE

The recording ended.

But nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The only sound in the room was the rain.

Heavy.

Relentless.

Like the entire world outside was trying to drown out the truth that had just been revealed.

Olivia Harper held the small device tightly in her hand.

Her fingers trembled.

Not from fear.

From confusion.

Because the voice belonged to Michael Bennett.

Noah's father.

The man who had spent two weeks searching for answers.

The man who had taken his son to hospitals.

The man who had stayed awake every night beside his bed.

But the message sounded like a warning.

A final warning.

"Protect Noah."

Olivia slowly looked at Vanessa.

"What does this mean?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the device.

Like she was seeing a ghost.

"No."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"No, no, no..."

She stepped backward.

Olivia noticed something strange.

For the first time since she met Vanessa...

the woman looked afraid.

Not annoyed.

Not cold.

Afraid.

"Vanessa," Olivia said firmly.

"What is happening?"

Vanessa finally looked at her.

"You need to leave."

Olivia frowned.

"What?"

"Take Noah and leave this house."

Noah stared at her stepmother.

"But why?"

Vanessa looked at him.

And something changed.

The coldness disappeared.

For a brief moment, she looked like a woman who was exhausted.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

"Because I was wrong."

The words shocked Olivia.

"What do you mean?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"I thought I could control it."

The room became silent.

Noah's face turned pale.

"Control what?"

Vanessa looked at the cast.

The damaged cast.

The thing that had terrified everyone.

"The truth."

Before Olivia could ask more, a loud sound came from downstairs.

A door slammed.

Not the front door.

A different door.

A hidden door.

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

"He's inside."

Olivia grabbed Noah.

"Who is inside?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Instead, she ran to the closet.

She pushed aside several jackets.

Behind them was a small wooden panel.

Hidden in the wall.

Noah stared.

"I didn't know that was there."

Vanessa opened it.

Inside was a narrow passage.

Dark.

Old.

"Where does that go?" Olivia asked.

"Outside."

Vanessa looked at Noah.

"Your father built it years ago."

Olivia froze.

"Michael built a secret passage?"

Vanessa nodded.

"But he never told me why."

A sudden noise came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming closer.

Vanessa closed the panel.

Then whispered:

"Hide."

Olivia looked around.

"There is nowhere to hide."

Vanessa pointed toward the passage.

"Take Noah."

"What about you?"

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she smiled sadly.

"I need to fix what I started."

Olivia didn't understand.

"What did you start?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Because the bedroom door handle moved.

Someone was trying to enter.

Once.

Twice.

Then the lock clicked.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Not the person Olivia saw outside the window.

Someone else.

A stranger.

Tall.

Wearing a dark jacket.

His face calm.

Almost emotionless.

He looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on Noah.

"There you are."

Noah immediately hid behind Olivia.

The stranger smiled.

A terrible smile.

"You have caused a lot of trouble, little man."

Olivia stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored her.

He looked at Vanessa.

"You failed."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"Leave my house."

The man laughed softly.

"Your house?"

He looked around.

"Nothing here belongs to you."

Olivia noticed something.

The man wasn't surprised by the secret passage.

He knew about it.

He knew the house.

He knew them.

"Who are you?" Olivia asked again.

This time, the man answered.

"My name is Daniel."

A pause.

"Daniel Bennett."

The room went completely silent.

Noah looked confused.

"Bennett?"

Olivia's eyes widened.

"You're related to Michael?"

Daniel smiled.

"I'm his brother."

The truth hit Olivia.

Michael had a brother.

A brother nobody mentioned.

A brother who appeared in the middle of the night.

A brother who knew about the cast.

"What do you want?" Vanessa demanded.

Daniel looked at Noah.

"I want what belongs to me."

Noah shook his head.

"I don't have anything."

Daniel walked closer.

"You have no idea what you have."

Olivia stepped between them.

"Stay away from him."

Daniel stopped.

Then he looked at Olivia.

"You are the babysitter."

Not a question.

A statement.

"How do you know me?"

Daniel smiled.

"Because I've been watching this house for weeks."

Olivia felt cold.

"Watching?"

"Yes."

He pointed toward the cast.

"That was never meant to hurt him."

Noah's eyes filled with tears.

"Then why did you put something inside?"

Daniel looked at him.

And for the first time...

his expression changed.

A small hint of guilt.

"Because I needed proof."

"Proof of what?"

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"That she was lying."

Olivia turned.

"Vanessa?"

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel continued.

"Your stepmother has been hiding something."

Noah's voice cracked.

"What?"

Daniel stepped closer.

"Your mother didn't die in an accident."

The room stopped.

Olivia looked at Noah.

The boy froze.

Because for eight years...

he believed his mother was gone.

Dead.

A memory.

But now a stranger was saying otherwise.

Vanessa whispered:

"Don't listen to him."

Daniel laughed.

"Still protecting the lie?"

"What lie?" Olivia asked.

Vanessa looked at Noah.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I was going to tell him."

"When?" Daniel asked.

"When he was older?"

His voice became angry.

"You always said that."

Noah began crying.

"Someone please tell me what's happening."

Olivia immediately knelt beside him.

"Hey. Look at me."

Noah looked up.

"I know this is scary."

"But we're going to find the truth."

Daniel reached into his pocket.

Olivia tensed.

But he didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

He threw it onto the bed.

The picture landed in front of Noah.

Noah picked it up.

His hands shook.

It was a woman.

A woman with his eyes.

His smile.

His face.

"My mom?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

It was his mother.

Alive.

Standing beside a hospital.

Taken recently.

Noah whispered:

"She's alive."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

A tear fell.

"I'm sorry."

The words broke something inside the room.

Noah looked at her.

"You knew?"

Vanessa couldn't speak.

"You knew my mom was alive?"

"I was trying to protect you."

"No!"

Noah screamed.

The sound broke everyone's heart.

"I asked you every day about her!"

His voice shook.

"You told me she was gone!"

Vanessa cried.

"I thought I was saving you."

But Daniel interrupted.

"No."

His voice was cold.

"You were saving yourself."

Suddenly Olivia's phone rang.

Everyone turned.

The storm had passed.

The signal returned.

Unknown number.

Olivia answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a woman's voice came through.

Weak.

Shaking.

But familiar.

"Olivia?"

Olivia froze.

Because she recognized it.

She had heard it only in pictures.

But somehow...

she knew.

"Who is this?"

A pause.

Then:

"I'm Noah's mother."

Noah gasped.

The phone slipped from Olivia's hand.

The voice continued:

"Please..."

A sob.

"Don't let them find me."

Then the line went dead.

And in that moment, everyone realized something.

The mystery inside the cast...

was only the beginning.

May you like

Because Noah's mother was alive.

And someone was trying to kill her.
