Chapter 4 - The Walls Come Down

The sun was just beginning to rise over Long Island, casting a pale, soft pink light over the heavy stone mansion.
The perimeter was secured by dozens of loyal Russo men. The glass was being swept up, the damaged walls cleared, but inside the master wing, the silence remained absolute.
Dominic walked down the long carpeted hallway, with Elena walking beside him. She was wearing one of Dominic’s soft cashmere sweaters over her torn clothes, her cheek neatly bandaged by the family doctor who had met them at the gate.
They reached the secret elevator hidden in the master suite closet.
Dominic punched in the six-digit code. The heavy steel doors slid open with a low hum.
Inside the small, plush safe room, the three girls were sitting in a tight circle on the rug. They looked up instantly when the doors opened.
When they saw Dominic, they flinched slightly.
Then, Elena stepped out from behind his tall frame.
The change was instantaneous.
"Miss Elena!" Mia shrieked.
The three girls scrambled to their feet, running across the room as fast as their small legs could carry them. They threw themselves into Elena’s arms, weeping, clinging to her sweater, burying their little faces into her neck.
"You came back! You came back!" Lucia cried out loud, her voice clear and bright.
"We missed you! We missed the song!" Valentina sobbed, her tiny hands holding onto Elena’s collar as if she would never let go again.
Elena dropped to her knees, hugging all three girls tightly against her chest, tears streaming freely down her cheeks. "I'm here, my sweet birds. I'm here. I’ll never leave you again. I promise."
Dominic stood outside the elevator threshold, watching the scene unfold.
A few days ago, this sight would have filled him with bitter, poisonous jealousy. It would have bruised his masculine pride. But now, as he watched his daughters weep and speak and cling to this extraordinary woman, all he felt was a profound, humbling wave of gratitude that nearly brought him to his knees.
He didn't step into the room. He didn't interrupt. He turned quietly to walk away, giving them their space.
"Daddy?"
Dominic froze.
He turned back slowly.
Mia was standing at the edge of the safe room, holding Lucia’s hand. She looked at her father, her dark eyes reflecting the morning light streaming through the master bedroom windows.
"Daddy... come here," Mia said softly.
Dominic felt his breath catch in his chest. He looked at Elena, who offered him a small, reassuring nod, signing gently behind the girls: Go to them.
Dominic walked over slowly, dropping to his knees before his three daughters.
Mia reached out her small, warm hand and touched the dark bruise on Dominic’s jaw—a mark from the night's violent battle.
"Did you fight the bad men?" Mia asked quietly.
"Yes, baby," Dominic choked out, his voice thick with unshed tears. "Daddy fought the bad men."
"Did you bring Miss Elena home?" Valentina asked, stepping closer to him.
"Yes," Dominic whispered, taking both of their small hands into his giant palms. "I brought her home. And I am so, so sorry that I let her leave. Can you ever forgive Daddy?"
The three girls looked at each other. Then, without a word, Lucia stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Dominic’s neck. Mia and Valentina followed, burying their faces into his chest.

Dominic wrapped his massive arms around all three of his daughters, burying his face in their soft hair, weeping silently as the heavy, dark iron cage around his heart finally shattered into a million pieces.
Elena sat on the floor beside them, watching the family heal in the soft pink light of the dawn, a peaceful, beautiful smile lighting up her face.
