Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

The rain was falling in heavy, icy sheets over the industrial district down by the river. The abandoned meatpacking warehouse on 4th Street sat in darkness, surrounded by rusting shipping containers and rotting timber.

Inside, two dim floodlights illuminated the center of the concrete floor.

Daniel Webb sat tied to a heavy wooden chair, his face bruised and bloody. He was thirty-five, but he looked fifty—his skin sallow from years of heavy drinking and cheap drugs, his eyes darting frantically around the dark shadows of the room.

The heavy iron door creaked open.

Connor Malone walked into the warehouse, surrounded by four tall men in tailored black coats. The sound of Connor’s dress shoes clicking against the wet concrete echoed like thunder in the silent space.

"Connor!" Daniel gasped, trying to pull against the thick ropes binding his wrists. "Connor, thank God! Your men jumped me! Tell them to untie me! It’s me, Daniel!"

Connor stopped five feet away. He didn't look angry. He looked entirely indifferent, which was far more terrifying.

"Hello, Daniel," Connor said quietly.

"Connor, listen to me," Daniel babbled frantically, sweat pouring down his face. "The Voronins are after me! They forced me back to the city! I didn't have a choice—"

"Four years ago," Connor cut in smoothly, taking a pair of black leather gloves from his pocket and pulling them onto his hands, finger by finger. "Four years ago, you came to my office. You wept. You begged for two hundred thousand dollars to take Sarah and your newborn baby to California to hide from rival crews."

Daniel swallowed hard. "I... I tried to, Connor, but—"

"I gave you the money out of respect for my late brother, who always thought you were a decent man," Connor continued, stepping closer. "I found out today where that money went. You dropped it on a high-stakes poker game in Atlantic City forty-eight hours later. You lost every penny."

Daniel’s face drained of what little color it had left. "Connor, please—"

"And then," Connor’s voice dropped into a dangerous whisper, "you left a twenty-two-year-old mother alone with a infant child, running from loan sharks, while you hid in Miami living off cheap hustles."

"She didn't need me!" Daniel screamed defensively, his cowardice spilling out in a pathetic display. "Sarah was always tough! She always managed! She didn't care about me anyway!"

Smack.

Connor’s backhand struck Daniel across the face with explosive force. The chair tilted onto two legs before slamming back down. Blood sprayed from Daniel’s split lip onto the concrete.

"She was sitting on a sidewalk today, dying of a heart condition because she was starving herself so your daughter could buy bananas!" Connor roared, his composure finally breaking into pure, blinding rage. "A six-year-old child had to count thirty-four nickels and dimes because her father is a pathetic, spineless parasite!"

Daniel wept, spitting blood onto his shirt. "I’m sorry! I’m sorry, Connor! I’ll leave the city! I’ll never come back! Just let me go!"

"You're not leaving," Connor said, stepping back and taking off his gloves. "Because Viktor Voronin knows you're back. And he thinks he can use Sarah and Gracie to force my hand."

At that exact moment, the heavy metal doors at the far end of the warehouse were blown off their hinges with a deafening bang.

Automatic gunfire shattered the darkness, red tracer rounds ripping through the air and tearing into the wooden crates around them.

"Ambush!" Liam shouted, drawing his sidearm and returning fire while pushing Connor behind a concrete pillar.

Through the cloud of gun smoke and dust, Viktor Voronin stepped into the warehouse, flanked by a dozen heavily armed mercenaries. Viktor was a ruthless, cold-eyed Russian mobster who had been fighting the Malone family for control of the northern territory for a decade.

"Malone!" Viktor’s booming voice echoed through the warehouse over the sound of gunfire. "I knew following this piece of trash Daniel would lead me straight to you!"

Viktor held up a heavy combat rifle, a cruel grin spreading across his scar-lined face. "Daniel offered me something very interesting today, Connor. He said you always had a soft spot for his wife. I don't just want the docks anymore, Malone. I want your entire empire. Give it to me, or my men will tear this city apart until we find the girl and her mother!"

Connor looked out from behind the pillar, his eyes cold as ice, a dark, lethal smile touching his lips.

"You made a mistake coming here tonight, Viktor," Connor called out, his voice smooth and steady despite the chaotic gunfire. "You brought a dozen men to a war... in my city."
