Chapter 5 - The Battle for the Future

The underground tunnel was cold, damp, and lit only by low-voltage emergency lights spaced every thirty feet. Grace ran as fast as her aching shoulder would allow, holding Noah’s small hand tightly in hers.
Noah was crying silently, his breathing ragged. Every few steps, he looked back over his shoulder into the dark tunnel, signing frantically with his free hand: Daddy? Daddy coming?
Daddy is fighting, Grace signed back as they ran, her heart tearing into pieces. He is strong. Keep running!
They reached the end of the tunnel, which opened into an underground garage containing a reinforced black armored SUV. The heavy metal exit doors led out to a hidden driveway obscured by dense pine trees at the edge of the estate.
Grace pulled out the emergency key fob Dominic had handed her, unlocking the vehicle. She rushed Noah into the back seat, clicking his seatbelt into place.
Before she could climb into the driver’s seat, a cold barrel of steel pressed hard against the back of her neck.
"End of the line, sweetheart," a raspy, ruthless voice sneered.
Grace froze. She slowly raised her hands and turned her head around.
Standing behind her was Lorenzo Dante himself. He was an older man with slicked-back gray hair, wearing a fine tailored Italian suit, his face marred by an evil, cruel smile. Behind him stood four heavily armed soldiers.
"Lorenzo Dante," Grace said, keeping her voice completely steady, shielding the open car door with her body.
"The famous waitress," Dante laughed softly, his breath smelling of expensive cigars. "You've caused me a lot of trouble, girl. Dominic Vale was an untouchable king until you came along. You made him weak. You made him act like a human being instead of a monster."
Dante grabbed Grace by the hair, dragging her away from the car. She gasped in pain, but fought back fiercely, kicking him square in the shin.
Dante cursed, striking her across the face with the back of his hand. Grace fell hard onto the cold concrete floor of the garage, blood trickling from the corner of her lip.
Noah saw it happen through the SUV window. He unbuckled his seatbelt, scrambled out of the car, and threw himself onto Dante’s leg, biting down hard on the mob boss’s wrist with all his strength.
"Ah! Get this little brat off me!" Dante screamed, raising his gun to strike the child.
"Don't touch him!" Grace shrieked, scrambling forward on her hands and knees to grab Dante’s leg.
Before Dante could strike Noah, the metal heavy doors of the tunnel exploded inward with violent force.
A shadow surged through the smoke—a towering figure covered in blood, sweat, and absolute, apocalyptic rage.
Dominic Vale had arrived.
He didn't fire a gun. He moved like a demonic force of nature. He slammed into the first guard, snapping his neck with a brutal twist, seized the man's weapon, and opened fire on the other three soldiers before they could even rotate their barrels.
Dante scrambled backward in sheer terror, dropping his gun as Dominic marched toward him through the smoke.
Dominic dropped his empty firearm, stepping over the fallen bodies. His face was soaked in sweat and splattered with enemy blood, his gray eyes burning with lethal, terrifying vengeance.
"You came into my home," Dominic said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that shook the concrete walls. "You threatened my son. You touched the woman I love."
Dante reached frantically into his coat for a backup pistol, but Dominic grabbed him by the throat, lifting the heavy mob boss off the ground with a single arm. He slammed Dante hard against the reinforced concrete pillar.
"Please... Dominic... wait..." Dante choked out, his eyes bulging as his legs kicked uselessly in the air. "We can make a deal... the shipping routes... everything..."
"No deals," Dominic whispered coldly into Dante’s ear. "Not anymore."
With a sudden, violent twist, Dominic snapped Dante’s neck. The body went limp, dropping onto the garage floor like a sack of stones.
Silence descended upon the garage, broken only by the sound of heavy dripping water and Dominic’s ragged breathing.
Dominic stood over the fallen body of his rival, his hands shaking, his chest rising and falling heavily. The war that had haunted his family for a decade was finally over.
He turned slowly around.
Grace was sitting on the floor, holding Noah tightly in her lap. Noah was safe, his head buried in her sweater.
Grace looked up at Dominic through her tears. She saw the blood on his hands, the terrifying destruction he was capable of, but she also saw the man who had laid his life on the line to keep them safe.
Dominic walked toward them slowly, dropping to his knees on the concrete. He reached out with trembling, hesitant fingers, terrified that his blood-stained hands would dirty her.
"It's over," Dominic whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "It's all over."
Grace reached out, ignoring the blood, and took his large, shaking hands into her own. She lifted them to her face, pressing a gentle kiss against his calloused knuckles.
"You kept your promise," Grace smiled, tears streaming down her face. "You came back."
Noah pulled back from Grace's chest. He looked at his father, then looked at Grace.
With slow, careful, and deliberate movements, the small six-year-old boy raised both his hands. He looked straight into Dominic’s eyes and signed three words that he had never signed to anyone in his entire life:
May you like
I love you, Daddy.
Dominic choked back a sob, pulling both Noah and Grace into his arms, holding them as if they were the only two precious things in the entire universe.
