Chapter 4 - The Traitor in the Shadows

The atmosphere inside the Vale estate transformed overnight from a quiet sanctuary into an active war room. Armored vehicles were parked along the perimeter drive, extra guards armed with assault rifles were stationed at every entrance, and the constant hum of radio chatter filled the hallways.
Dominic spent the entire morning in his study with his top lieutenants. Map printouts of Chicago’s industrial district covered the grand oak desk, alongside detailed security schematics of the estate.
Grace sat in the library adjacent to the study, trying to keep Noah calm. They were sitting on a plush rug, playing with wooden building blocks. Grace was teaching him new signs—house, family, strong—but her own mind was racing with fear.
She knew she was the catalyst for this escalation. Lorenzo Dante was using her presence, her survival, as proof that Dominic had grown soft, that he cared for a nobody waitress.
At noon, the heavy double doors of the study opened, and Dominic walked out. He looked exhausted; the dark circles under his eyes were pronounced, and his jaw was set in a tight, dangerous line.
He motioned for Grace to follow him into the hallway.
"I am sending you and Noah away," Dominic said flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. "An armored transport will take you both to a safehouse in Wisconsin under heavy guard. You’ll be safe there."
Grace shook her head immediately. "No. I'm not running away."
"This isn't a discussion, Grace!" Dominic snapped, his voice echoing off the high ceiling. "Dante isn't playing games. He has heavy weaponry, and he knows this estate's layout. If he attacks, this place will become a slaughterhouse."
"If he knows the estate's layout, it means you have a leak," Grace said sharply, stepping closer to him, refusing to back down. "How else would he know I was here? Only a handful of your inner circle knew you took me from the diner!"
Dominic froze. His sharp mind immediately processed her words. She was right. The information about Grace’s location had been kept strictly within his top tier of commanders.
"Ivan," Dominic muttered, his eyes narrowing to cold slits.
"What?" Grace asked.
"Ivan was the one who scouted the diner route the night of the attack," Dominic realized, his voice trembling with quiet, deadly fury. "And he was the one who coordinated the guard rotations at the front gates this morning."
Before Dominic could call Marko, a sudden, loud explosion rocked the foundation of the house.
The glass in the hallway windows shattered inward. Alarms blared loudly throughout the estate, their red emergency lights flashing rhythmically against the stone walls.
"They're already here!" Dominic shouted, drawing his firearm from his holster.
He grabbed Grace by the arm, pulling her back into the library where Noah was standing, terrified, looking at the flashing red lights. He couldn't hear the sirens, but the violent shaking of the floor and the flashing red emergency strobes had sent him into a panic.
Grace dropped to her knees, pulling Noah into her arms, signing wildly: Safe! Safe with me!
The library door suddenly burst open. Ivan stepped into the room, holding an automatic submachine gun. He wasn't wearing his usual security earpiece. Behind him stood three masked gunmen clad in tactical gear bearing Dante's crest.
"Sorry, Boss," Ivan said with a cold, greasy grin. "Dante offered me ten million and a seat at the high table. You've gone soft over a deaf kid and a broke waitress. It’s time for a change in management."
"I gave you everything, Ivan," Dominic said, stepping slowly in front of Grace and Noah, his body blocking them completely from Ivan’s gun barrel. "I paid for your mother’s medical treatment. I gave you a home."
"Money talks louder than loyalty, Vale," Ivan sneered. He raised his weapon, aiming directly at Dominic’s chest. "Say goodbye to your son."
In that split second, Grace acted.
She reached out to the heavy marble side table beside her, grabbed a heavy brass lamp, and slammed it down with all her strength onto the exposed electrical power strip near the wall outlet.
A massive shower of bright blue sparks erupted instantly, blinding the gunmen for a fraction of a second.
"Now, Dominic!" Grace screamed.
Dominic didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, ducking under Ivan’s aim, and fired three rapid shots from his heavy pistol.
Ivan gasped, dropping his weapon as he collapsed onto the carpet.
The three masked gunmen opened fire, spraying bullets into the library bookshelves. Leather-bound books shredded into clouds of paper dust.
Dominic grabbed Ivan’s fallen submachine gun, returning a heavy volley of fire that forced the attackers back out into the hallway. He kicked the heavy oak doors shut and threw the massive brass lock into place.
"The secret passage," Dominic ordered, turning back to Grace, his face covered in gun smoke. "Behind the bookshelf on the left. It leads to the underground garage. Take Noah and go!"
"What about you?" Grace cried, holding Noah tightly against her chest.
"I have to clear the main hall so Marko and the remaining loyal men can secure the perimeter," Dominic said. He stepped up to Grace, reaching out with his blood-stained hand to gently cup her cheek. His thumb brushed over her skin with unbelievable tenderness. "If I don't make it out of this alive... take care of my boy. Teach him to be better than me."
"No!" Grace shouted, tears spilling over her cheeks. "You don't get to die today, Dominic Vale! You promised him you’d learn! You owe him a life!"
Dominic looked into her tear-filled eyes, feeling a profound, overwhelming surge of love and hope that he had thought dead for six years.
He leaned down and pressed a deep, passionate kiss onto her lips—a kiss filled with desperate promise, unspoken devotion, and fierce determination to survive.
When he pulled back, his eyes were blazing with unstoppable fire.

"I'll come back to you," Dominic vowed. "Now GO!"
He pulled the hidden lever on the bookshelf. The heavy wooden case swung open, revealing a dark, descending stone staircase. Grace grabbed Noah by the hand and hurried down into the darkness, the sound of heavy gunfire echoing above them as Dominic Vale turned to face his enemies alone.
