Chapter 2 - The Fall of the False Bride

The silence in the grand courtyard was so absolute that the rhythmic drip-drip-drip of water falling from Sarah’s soaked dress sounded like a ticking time bomb.
Sarah stood frozen, her mind spinning. She looked down at the tiny, purring cat in her arms. Twenty years ago, when she was just a five-year-old child, her mother had panicked, dragging her away from a massive stone mansion in the middle of the night to escape a terrifying family plot. They had lived in poverty, changing their names, surviving on pennies. Her mother had passed away five years ago, leaving her with nothing but a single, fading memory of a tiny silver bell and a mother's promise that "the roses would guide her home."
She had taken a low-paying florist job at this very country club just to afford milk for her own four-year-old daughter, Lily, who was currently waiting in the staff daycare room. She had no idea she was stepping directly into the lion's den.
"This is a lie! A scam!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking into a manic shriek as she pointed a manicured finger at Arthur Pendelton. "You're a traitor, Arthur! My father paid you to manage the trust! You're fabricating stories with a broke peasant to steal my inheritance!"
"Your father, Richard Harrington, is currently being detained by federal marshals at the airport, Chloe," Arthur said calmly, pulling a certified court order from his folder and handing it to Charles. "We discovered that twenty years ago, Richard paid a corrupt local official to falsify the death certificates of Eleanor and Sarah. He then systematically drained Eleanor’s private trust to fund your luxury lifestyle and this very wedding."
Charles Harrington stood up slowly, the grief on his face instantly hardening into a lethal, predatory rage. He turned his gaze upon Chloe, looking at her as if she were a piece of garbage stuck to his shoe.
"You knew, didn't you, Chloe?" Charles said, his voice dangerously low. "When that cat wandered onto the estate last month, you recognized the collar. You realized Sarah was alive and working right under our noses. That's why you tried to drown the poor animal in the lake, and that's why you targeted Sarah today."
"Grandfather, please!" Chloe fell to her knees, her expensive lace dress soaking up the dirty water Sarah had brought out of the pool. She grabbed the hem of Charles’s trousers. "I'm your granddaughter! I’ve been by your side for years! You can't cast me out for a stranger who plays with dirt!"

"You are no granddaughter of mine," Charles said, kicking his leg free from her grip. "Security! Stripped this woman of her club privileges. Remove her from the property immediately. And cancel the catering contracts. There will be no wedding today, or ever, under the Harrington name for this branch of the family."
Four massive security guards stepped forward, grabbing Chloe by her upper arms. She screamed and thrashed, her veil ripping out of her hair and falling into the mud as she was dragged down the white rose aisle in front of the very high-society peers she had spent her life trying to impress.
