Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit

By 2:00 AM, the Castillo estate looked like a military command center.
Searchlights mounted on federal vans illuminated the front gardens. Ambulance crews, forensic teams, and federal agents filled the grand marble foyer, taking photographs and cataloging evidence from the underground vault.
Dr. Mercer, the chief of pediatrics at St. Jude’s Hospital, walked out of the ground-floor guest suite where Elena and little Leo were being examined.
Alejandro was waiting in the hallway, wearing a clean shirt, his knuckles bruised from slamming his fist against the library wall earlier.
"How are they, David?" Alejandro asked, his voice low and tight.
Dr. Mercer sighed, pulling off his wire-rimmed glasses. "Leo is severely malnourished, Alejandro. He has mild rickets from lack of sunlight and vitamin D, but his heart and lungs are strong. Physically, he will recover with proper nutrition and therapy."
"And Elena?"
Dr. Mercer’s expression hardened. "She has multiple healed fractures in her ribs and left wrist that were never set properly by a physician. She’s suffering from severe anemia, physical exhaustion, and profound psychological trauma. Whoever held her down there was administering low doses of heavy sedatives to keep her compliant."
Alejandro’s breath hitched. "Sedatives?"
"Scopolamine and lithium," Dr. Mercer revealed, handing a small blood analysis report to Alejandro. "It kept her memory hazy and her reaction times slow. It’s a miracle her mind survived three years of that dosage. She needs absolute rest, Alejandro. No stress, no interrogations."
"She won't be questioned by anyone," Alejandro declared firmly. "She stays in this house under my private guard."
At that moment, District Attorney Marcus Vance walked down the grand staircase, holding an encrypted tablet device. Two federal agents followed behind him carrying four heavy metal boxes retrieved from Vivian Moretti’s private suite on the second floor.
"Alejandro," Vance said, motioning for him to step into the study. "You need to see this."
They walked into the dimly lit study. Vance placed the tablet on the mahogany desk, opening a series of digitized bank transfers and medical records.
"We just cracked Vivian’s private server," Vance explained, tapping the screen. "This wasn't just a spontaneous act of jealousy, Alejandro. It was a calculated corporate takeover."
Alejandro leaned over the desk, staring at the financial records. "What do you mean?"
"Three years ago, before Elena disappeared, your company was preparing to launch the Metropolitan Harbor Project—a fifteen-billion-dollar infrastructure contract," Vance revealed. "Elena was the lead architect. She discovered that Moretti Construction—owned by Vivian’s father, Senator Moretti—was using substandard steel and fraudulent safety certifications to skim millions from the budget."
Alejandro’s eyes widened in realization. "Elena was going to report them."
"She had the internal audit folder ready to deliver to the federal grand jury on the exact night she was abducted," Vance continued, swiping to a set of encrypted email threads. "Vivian intercepted her. She abducted Elena to steal the audit folder and suppress the whistleblowing. But then she realized something even more valuable: as long as Elena was 'missing' and not declared dead, you couldn't settle the Castillo estate."
"So Vivian moved into my life," Alejandro whispered, the horror settling deep into his chest. "She offered herself as a comforting shoulder... she pushed herself into my business... she convinced me to make her the executive vice-president of Castillo Enterprises."
"And for three years, she used her position in your company to wire over two hundred million dollars into Senator Moretti’s offshore accounts," Vance finished coldly. "She kept Elena locked in the basement as collateral. If you ever discovered the financial fraud, Vivian would use Elena’s life to force your silence."
Alejandro looked at the metal boxes sitting on the floor—boxes filled with Elena’s stolen architectural designs, her original audit files, and three years of recorded security footage from the underground vault.
"Where is Senator Moretti?" Alejandro asked, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the veteran prosecutor shiver.
"Federal agents surrounded his estate in Capital Hill twenty minutes ago," Vance replied. "He’s currently in custody."
Alejandro picked up his phone, dialing Commander Santos.
"Santos," Alejandro said smoothly. "Has Vivian been transferred to the county jail yet?"
May you like
"No, sir. The transport van just arrived in the driveway."
"Tell them to wait," Alejandro ordered, walking toward the door. "I want to speak to Miss Moretti one last time."
