Chapter 1 - The Crimson Mark

The air inside the Blackwood estate’s grand memorial hall was choked with the suffocating scent of fresh white lilies and melting wax. Soft, mournful violin music drifted from hidden speakers, a calculated backdrop designed to project an image of profound family grief.

But when Ethan uttered those four words—“She was pregnant. Who did this?”—the music seemed to vanish entirely, replaced by a vacuum of pure terror.

Adrian’s jaw dropped. The glass of expensive scotch he had been clutching slipped from his fingers, shattering violently against the cold marble floor. The dark amber liquid splattered across the polished leather of his shoes, but he didn't even blink. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost, his skin turning a translucent, ghostly white under the glittering crystal chandeliers.

“Ethan,” Margaret said, her voice dropping its soft, comforting funeral tone and turning into an icy, desperate hiss. She stepped directly between Ethan and the open mahogany casket, her silk mourning shawl fluttering like the wings of a vulture. “You are completely out of line. The grief has unhinged you. Claire suffered a tragic, sudden heart failure due to a congenital defect. To stand over her body and scream these baseless, disgusting fabrications is an insult to her memory!”

“Move, Margaret,” Ethan said.

His voice wasn't loud. It didn't bounce off the high, frescoed ceilings of the hall. Instead, it was a low, terrifyingly steady rumble—the sound of a man who had crossed the threshold of sorrow and stepped directly into the realm of execution.

Margaret didn't budge. She raised her chin, flashing her massive diamond rings, trying to use the full weight of her status as the Blackwood family matriarch to crush his resolve. “I will not move. I am her mother-in-law. I protected Claire in life, and I will protect her dignity in death from your theatrical outbursts. Guards! Escort my nephew out of the hall immediately!”

Two large, security men in dark suits stepped forward from the shadows of the arched doorway. But before they could even lay a hand on Ethan, he moved with lethal efficiency.

Ethan gripped Margaret’s forearm, not hard enough to break the bone, but with enough tactical pressure to force her to step aside. With his other hand, he reached into the casket and completely pulled back the fine lace shawl covering Claire’s neck.

A collective gasp ripped through the crowd of forty elite socialites gathered in the room.

The faint mark near her collarbone wasn't a blemish. Under the harsh, direct light of the funeral lamps, it was clearly revealed to be a deep, bruised indentation of a thumb, paired with a matching crescent-shaped scrape further up her neck—the unmistakable mark of a violent, suffocating grip.

“A congenital heart defect doesn't leave fingernail marks in human flesh, Margaret,” Ethan whispered, his eyes locked dead onto his cousin Adrian.

Adrian stumbled backward until his spine slammed into a heavy marble pillar. Sweat was pouring down his forehead, soaking the stiff collar of his custom tuxedo. “Ethan… listen to me. I didn't… we didn't know. She was found in the garden. The doctors said it was natural causes! They signed the certificate!”

“Which doctor?” Ethan demanded, stepping over the shattered glass of Adrian's drink, closing the distance between them like a predator cornering a cornered rat. “Which corrupt medical examiner did you pay to sign off on the murder of my sister and her unborn child?”

Adrian opened his mouth, his lips trembling violently, but no sound came out. He looked desperately at his mother, begging for a lifeline.

Margaret stood rigid, her eyes darting to the whispers breaking out among the wealthy guests. The perfect facade of the Blackwood family honor was shattering in real-time.

“This funeral is over,” Margaret announced sharply, her voice cracking under the pressure. “Clear the room! Everyone out! Now!”

As the panicked guests began to rush toward the grand exit doors, Ethan turned back to Claire’s peaceful face. He gently reached down, smoothing a stray strand of dark hair away from her cold forehead.

“I’m sorry I wasn't here to protect you, little sister,” Ethan whispered, his hand tightening into a fist so hard his knuckles turned white. “But I promise you… they will not get to bury your secrets with you.”
