Chapter 3 - The Bloodline of Windmere

"Where are we going?" I gasped, pulling a sleepy, warm Emma against my shoulder as Alessandro guided us through a narrow, hidden panel behind the guest room’s bookshelf.
"The eastern annex," Alessandro said, holding a small flashlight that illuminated a narrow stone staircase winding downward into the foundations of the mansion. "This house was built during Prohibition. There are three miles of fortified tunnels beneath the estate. They have reinforced steel doors and an independent power grid."
Behind us, through the thick stone walls, came the unmistakable muffled sound of breaking glass and automatic gunfire echoing through the grand ballroom above. My daughter buried her face into my neck, whimpering softly.
"Shh, baby, it's okay. It's just thunder," I lied, soothing her back with a trembling hand while following Alessandro’s quick, confident steps down into the dark.
We reached a thick iron door at the foot of the stairs. Alessandro typed a six-digit code into a illuminated keypad and placed his palm against a biometric scanner. The heavy door hissed open, revealing a fully furnished, subterranean command center filled with security monitors displaying live feeds from every corner of the estate.
On the screens, I saw chaotic, terrifying images. Men in tactical gear with black ski masks were swarming the grand foyer, smashing glass cases, while Alessandro’s suit-clad guards returned fire from behind the marble pillars.
"Sit her on the sofa," Alessandro instructed, walking toward a heavy metal gun safe built into the concrete wall.
He unlocked it, pulling out a sleek black sidearm, checking the magazine with practiced, effortless efficiency before sliding it into his shoulder holster.
"Are you going up there?" I asked, terror gripping my chest. "There are too many of them!"
"This is my home, Clara," he said, turning to look at me. "Richard Cole thinks because my father is dead, I am weak. He thinks he can march into my estate, intimidate my people, and silence a innocent woman and a child because they exposed his daughter’s pathetic fraud."
He walked over to where I stood beside the sofa, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a silver key on a thin chain—the same master key that unlocked the estate’s vault and panic systems. He slipped it over my head, letting the cool metal rest against my collarbone.
"If the main feed goes dark," Alessandro said, looking deeply into my eyes, "press the red button under the primary monitor. It seals the tunnel gates permanently and alerts the federal marshals. Do not open this door for anyone except me or Marco. Do you understand?"
"Alessandro... please be careful," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.
For a brief, fleeting second, his cold, hardened expression softened. His fingers brushed lightly against my jaw, a fleeting touch that made my skin tingle despite the terror surrounding us.
"No one touches you while I breathe, Clara," he promised softly. "I told you that three years ago when I hired you. I meant it then, and I mean it now."
He turned on his heel, stepping back into the stone tunnel. The iron door hissed shut behind him, the heavy locks engaging with a series of metallic clicks that left me alone with my daughter in the echoing quiet of the underground bunker.
I rushed over to the security monitors, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.
On camera four, I watched Alessandro emerge from the east wing door into the main foyer. He moved with terrifying grace—not like a man under fire, but like a predator hunting in his own territory.
A masked shooter rounded the corner near the grand staircase, raising a rifle. Alessandro didn't hesitate. He raised his arm, fired two precise shots that brought the intruder down instantly, and slipped behind a marble archway before the man's body even hit the rug.
"Mama..." Emma whimpered from the sofa, rubbing her eyes. "Where is the nice man going?"
"He's... he's fixing the lights, sweetie," I choked out, keeping my eyes glued to the screens.
On camera two, the front entrance doors burst open. A tall, well-dressed man in an expensive wool coat stepped into the ruined foyer, flanked by three heavily armed bodyguards.
It was Richard Cole.
The billionaire dock magnate looked around at his fallen mercenaries with complete indifference, stepping over broken crystal chandeliers and torn oil paintings as if he owned the place.
"Alessandro!" Richard’s voice carried through the security feed’s audio system, echoing sharply through the ruined house. "Show yourself! You humiliated my daughter! You ruined a multi-billion-dollar merger over a common servant! Let’s end this like men!"
From the shadows behind the grand staircase, Alessandro stepped out into the open light. His tuxedo shirt was stained with soot, his gun held loosely at his side, his face completely calm.
"You brought thirty armed men into my home, Richard," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly quiet through the speaker. "You broke the commission treaty."
"The treaty died the moment you called my daughter a liar in front of the entire city!" Richard snarled, raising his hand to signal his guards. "Where is the maid, Moretti? Give me the woman and her bastard kid, and I’ll leave you your life and your estate. Refuse, and I’ll burn this entire valley to the ground!"
I held my breath, clutching the silver key around my neck so hard the metal edges bit into my palm.

Alessandro looked at Richard Cole, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his face.
"You brought thirty men, Richard," Alessandro said smoothly. "You should have brought an army."
