Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

Two years later.

The Moretti estate had been completely transformed. The cold, intimidating oil paintings of stern ancestors had been replaced by bright, open glass windows, vibrant modern artwork, and the warm, joyful sound of a child’s laughter echoing through the grand halls.

The grand ballroom, once the site of a cold political betrayal, was currently filled with white roses, golden ribbons, and eighty close friends, former staff members, and community leaders.

I stood before a tall gilded mirror in the bridal suite on the second floor, wearing an exquisite, custom-tailored lace gown that flowed softly around my figure. My hair was styled in an elegant braid adorned with fresh baby's breath.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Mrs. Vance—the former lead federal agent who had retired from the FBI to head our family’s charitable foundation—stepped inside holding a bouquet of white peonies.

"You look breathtaking, Clara," she said, her eyes warm with genuine affection.

"Thank you, Helen," I smiled, taking the flowers. "How is everything downstairs?"

"Marco is currently attempting to keep five five-year-olds from eating the entire wedding cake before the ceremony begins," Helen laughed softly. "And your daughter is taking her job as Head Flower Girl very seriously."

Right on cue, five-year-old Emma bounded into the room, wearing a fluffy pink princess dress and a tiara that sat slightly crooked on her golden curls. She was holding a tiny basket filled with pink rose petals—the very same kind of petals she had pointed out two years ago.

"Mama! Mama! You look like an angel!" Emma squealed, running up to hug my skirt before catching herself. "Wait! I can't wrinkle the dress! Uncle Marco said if I wrinkle the dress, I don't get extra ice cream!"

I knelt down, straightening her tiara with a tender smile. "You look beautiful, sweetie. Are you ready to walk down the aisle?"

"Yes!" Emma declared proudly. "And Daddy said he has a big surprise for us after the cake!"

My heart melted at the word Daddy.

Over the past two years, Alessandro hadn't just legally adopted Emma; he had become her whole world. He attended every school play, built a massive wooden treehouse in the back gardens with his own hands, and spent every evening sitting on the floor of her nursery reading fairy tales until she fell asleep.

The heavy church bells began to chime across the estate grounds, signaling the start of the ceremony.

I stood up, holding my bouquet tightly in one hand and my daughter’s little hand in the other. As we walked down the grand marble staircase toward the courtyard garden, the afternoon sun broke through the clouds, bathing the entire estate in a warm, golden radiance.

The courtyard was decorated with archways of white orchids and ivy.

At the end of the aisle stood Alessandro. He wore a sharp navy tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, his posture tall and commanding. But as his eyes locked onto mine, his intense, powerful persona melted away entirely, replaced by a look of such profound, unreserved devotion that it brought tears to my eyes.

Beside him stood Marco as his best man, looking surprisingly sleek in a fitted suit without his usual shoulder holster.

I walked down the aisle to the sweet, romantic melody of a single cello. Every step I took felt like stepping further away from the poverty, terror, and grief that had defined my early twenties, and stepping into a life built on absolute security and love.

When I reached the altar, Alessandro stepped forward, taking my hand into his warm palm and lifting Emma up with his other arm so she could sit comfortably on his hip.

"You took your time," Alessandro whispered playfully into my ear, his hazel eyes sparkling with happiness.

"I had to make sure my flower girl didn't eat the rose petals," I whispered back, my heart overflowing.

The officiant stepped forward, opening a leather book. "We are gathered here today to unite two families, born out of resilience, truth, and an unyielding bond that survived the darkest storms..."
