Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The 50th floor of the Kane Tower smelled of polished mahogany, expensive espresso, and ruthless corporate bloodlust.

Fourteen board members sat around a thirty-foot conference table made of black marble. At the far end sat Julian Vance—a grey-haired man with cold, watery blue eyes—and his daughter, Victoria, who was dressed in a tailored white suit that screamed aristocratic arrogance.

"It is already ten-fifteen," Julian Vance announced, tapping his gold pen against his leather notepad. "Roman Kane is late. This is unprecedented. His personal life has clearly compromised his ability to lead a forty-billion-dollar conglomerate. I move that we initiate an emergency vote to strip him of his executive chairmanship!"

"Seconded," Victoria chimed in, offering a sympathetic, fake smile to the camera crew standing near the back doors. "It is truly tragic. Roman was a brilliant CEO, but surrounding himself with... low-caliber influences has clearly destroyed his judgment."

Before the board secretary could take the roll call, the heavy double mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open with a deafening THUD.

Two six-foot-four Kane security guards stepped inside, standing at military attention on either side of the entrance.

Then, Roman walked in.

He looked immaculate in a three-piece charcoal suit, his presence so imposing that two elderly board members instantly stood up out of habit. But Roman didn't walk to the head of the table alone.

He held my hand firmly in his, guiding me into the room with slow, deliberate pride.

A collective gasp echoed across the room.

Victoria Vance’s jaw dropped. The pen slipped from Julian Vance’s fingers, clattering loudly against the glass water pitcher on the table. The reporters in the back immediately raised their cameras, flashes popping in a rapid, blinding rhythm.

They had expected a broken, crying girl hiding in a hospital. They had expected news of a quiet divorce or a financial settlement.

Instead, I walked in beside the most feared man in Manhattan, wearing emerald velvet, my short hair styled like a high-fashion crown, my face composed into a mask of pure, unwavering defiance.

"You're in my chair, Julian," Roman said, his voice quiet, clear, and dripping with lethal calm as we reached the head of the table.

Julian swallowed hard, scrambling out of the chief executive leather chair as if it had suddenly caught fire. "Roman! We... we were just concerned about your absence! The media reports—"

"The media reports were paid for by your daughter," I spoke up, my voice ringing through the vast boardroom with crystal clarity.

Victoria’s face turned an ugly, splotchy red. "How dare you speak to my father like that! You are a maid! A temporary distraction that my future family allowed into this building!"

Roman stepped forward, but I gently placed my hand on his forearm, holding him back. I looked Victoria straight in the eye, taking two slow steps toward her side of the table.

"I managed a kitchen in Gramercy for five years, Victoria," I said, my voice cold and smooth. "I’ve dealt with health inspectors, corrupt health officials, and violent drunks. You think a woman in a white suit frightens me?"

I reached into my small velvet clutch, pulled out a thick blue folder, and slammed it down onto the center of the marble table right in front of Julian Vance.

"What is this?" Julian stammered, backing away.

"That," I said, leaning over the table so every board member could hear me, "is a complete forensic audit of Vance Financial's offshore accounts in Zurich. Four days ago, you transferred four million dollars to Vivienne Kane to orchestrate an assault on my person, hoping to trigger a stock drop in Kane Corporation so you could execute a hostile takeover."

The board members gasped. Two senior directors immediately grabbed the blue files, flipping through the bank receipts, wire confirmations, and IP tracking logs Lucas’s team had compiled.

"This is absurd! It's a forgery!" Victoria shrieked, her voice losing every shred of its polished, high-society charm.

"The wire transfer bears your personal signature, Victoria," Roman added, stepping beside me, his hand resting securely on the small of my back. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, the Kane Corporation has acquired fifty-two percent of Vance Financial's short-term debt. We own your banks, Julian."

Julian Vance collapsed into his chair, his face ash-gray, clutching his chest as he realized his family empire had just been swallowed whole in less than five minutes.

"Security," Roman ordered, not even looking at the father and daughter. "Escort Mr. Vance and his daughter out of the building. Revoke their press passes. Strip their credentials."

As the guards grabbed Victoria’s arms to lead her away, she turned, screaming at me through her tears: "You're nothing! You're just a girl from Queens!"

I looked at her, offered a quiet, beautiful smile, and touched my short hair. "And yet... I'm the one standing here."
