Chapter 1 - The Cold Blood of Queens

The rain didn't stop, but the world inside the courtyard of the Kane estate turned completely to ice.

Roman moved across the wet gravel like an executioner advancing toward the scaffold. He wore no coat over his dark suit, but he didn't seem to feel the freezing deluge soaking through his shirt. His eyes—a shade of midnight blue so deep they appeared black—were fixed entirely on me.

He didn't look at his mother. He didn't look at the six armed guards standing along the limestone perimeter. His focus was singular, absolute, and terrifyingly calm.

"Bianca," he breathed as he reached me.

His massive, calloused hand came up to touch my face. His fingers were warm against my freezing skin. He gently brushed away a wet lock of hair that had survived the shears, his thumb tracing the jagged, bleeding tracks left across my scalp. When his eyes dropped to my bare, cut feet resting in the icy mud of the driveway, a muscle in his jaw twitched once. It was the only sign of the violent storm breaking inside him.

"Roman..." My voice was a shattered whisper. My jaw was locked so tight from shivering that the word barely escaped. "She... she took my hair..."

"I see it," Roman said softly. He stripped off his heavy suit jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders. It smelled of cedar, expensive tobacco, and the familiar, grounding warmth that had always made me feel safe, even when the world thought he was a monster.

He slid his arms beneath my knees and lifted me off the wet stone, cradling my eight-month-pregnant body against his chest as if I weighed nothing. I buried my face in the crook of his neck, my small hands clutching his wet shirt, letting the tiny kicks of our unborn daughter thump steadily against his ribs.

"Roman, don't be dramatic!" Vivienne Kane’s voice echoed down from the grand portico. She stepped out slightly, her silk dress rustling, her composure attempting a hasty, arrogant recovery. "The girl was out of line! She spoke to me as if she were an equal! I merely reminded her of her place before she brought shame to our name at the autumn gala!"

Roman didn't answer her immediately. He walked to the open back door of the black sedan, gently setting me onto the heated leather seat. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a single number on speaker.

"Lucas," Roman commanded into the phone, his tone flat. "Bring the medical transport to the main estate. Tell Dr. Vance my wife has suffered acute physical trauma and hypothermia. Bring two security details. Seize the property."

"Right away, boss," Lucas’s voice crackled back instantly.

"Roman!" Vivienne thundered, taking three sharp steps down the marble stairs into the rain. Her face was flushed with sudden, outraged fury. "Have you completely lost your mind?! I am your mother! I built the foundation you sit on! You do not bring guards to my home, and you do not speak to me through subordinates!"

Roman closed the car door softly, sealing me safely inside the warm interior. Then, he turned to face the woman who had given him life.

He didn't yell. He didn't raise his hands. He simply walked toward the portico until he was standing three feet from her. The two Kane bodyguards who usually answered to Vivienne shrank back into the shadows of the limestone columns, terrified to stand between the current king and the old matriarch.

"I asked a question when I stepped out of that car, Vivienne," Roman said, the rain pouring off his jawline. "And I don't like asking twice."

Vivienne stood her ground, her chin raised, her eyes flashing with aristocratic disdain. "I ordered her hair cut! It was cheap, unrefined trash—just like her! She belongs in a diner in Queens, Roman, not in the Kane ancestral home! I did what needed to be done to protect our legacy!"

"Who held her down?" Roman asked quietly.

Vivienne scoffed, turning her head slightly toward the two female domestic staff standing terrified behind the heavy oak doors. "They are my personal maids. They follow my instructions."

Roman turned his head toward his head of security, who was standing frozen by the heavy iron gates. "Marcus."

"Yes, Mr. Kane?" the guard swallowed nervously.

"Take the two women into custody. Hand them over to the district authority with full statements of aggravated assault and physical restraint of an expectant mother. If they resist, use force."

"Roman!" Vivienne shrieked, her voice cracking for the first time in thirty years. "You dare arrest my staff on my property?!"

May you like

"Your property?" Roman took a step closer, towering over her. "The land beneath your feet belongs to the Kane Corporation. The dress on your back is funded by my accounts. The air you breathe in this house exists because I allow you to live here. You forgot who holds the throne in this city, Mother."

He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a whisper that made Vivienne’s hands begin to tremble. "You cut her hair because you wanted to teach her a lesson about power. Now, I am going to teach you a lesson about survival. You have two hours to pack your clothes. By midnight, you will be on a private flight to our compound in northern Maine. You will not return to New York. You will never see my daughter. And if you ever speak my wife's name again, I will strip you of every dollar, every title, and every mercy I have left."
